Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm: Today, the Billionaires Are King

We've spent a lot of time talking about Super PACs and the Billionaire Boys Club. Why does this matter so much? Because it's poisoning, ruining, corrupting our democracy. I know it sounds trite -- "ruining our democracy" -- but I can find no more appropriate words.

Our founding fathers had a vision of a country where everyone participated in choosing our government. Yes, there were terrible flaws -- women and slaves certainly couldn't participate -- but it was better that one-king rule, and gradually we got to a place where everyone was involved... Where the streetsweepers vote mattered just as much as Donald Trump's.

But now, we're taking giant steps backward, away from the founders' vision. Back to what they fought against. Only today, the billionaires are king. They want to control the levers of government at any cost. Literally. Money is no object to them. The billionaires have a huge interest in controlling the president of the United States. A few million dollars is a small investment for the returns they will get from the policies they'll have *their* president enact...

And Mitt Romney would be their willing instrument. Yes, even the wealthy Mitt Romney, perhaps the wealthiest man to ever run for President -- he of the elevator for his garage -- even he is a supplicant to the billionaires.

Democrats have been forced to play this game too, and the entire spectrum now is corrupt. But it is clear that the vast majority of the billionaire money is on the right. This money is corrupting our political system. We have ventured so far from the vision of the founding fathers that if they were still alive, I'm certain those founders would start another revolution. I blame Citizens United.

We need a president willing and able to fight the most important fight of our generation -- passing a constitutional amendment overturning citizens united. We cannot allow billionaires to purchase a government or a president. Tell them: We will not allow our country to be bought. This is a battle worth waging.

As IPO nears, millions of users still opt out of Facebook

Even though many avoid the service, the 900 million users it does have are a key part of its value.

By Anick Jesdanun,?The Associated Press / May 17, 2012

Facebook increased the size of its initial public offering by almost 25 percent and could raise as much as $16 billion. Regardless, some advertising agencies and companies say the social network won't be able to drive up advertising revenue.

You won't find Thomas Chin, either. Or Kariann Goldschmitt. Or Jake Edelstein.

More than 900 million people worldwide check their Facebook accounts at least once a month, but millions more are Facebook holdouts.

They say they don't want Facebook. They insist they don't need Facebook. They say they're living life just fine without the long-forgotten acquaintances that the world's largest social network sometimes resurrects.

They are the resisters.

"I'm absolutely in touch with everyone in my life that I want to be in touch with," Arwood says. "I don't need to share triviality with someone that I might have known for six months 12 years ago."

Even without people like Arwood, Facebook is one of the biggest business success stories in history. The site had 1 million users by the end of 2004, the year Mark Zuckerberg started it in his Harvard dorm room. Two years later, it had 12 million. Facebook had 500 million by summer 2010 and 901 million as of March 31, according to the company.

That staggering rise in popularity is one reason why Facebook Inc.'s initial public offering is one of the most hotly anticipated in years. The company's shares are expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Friday under the ticker symbol "FB". Facebook is likely to have an estimated market valuation of some $100 billion, making it worth more than Kraft Foods, Ford or Disney.

Facebook still has plenty of room to grow, particularly in developing countries where people are only starting to get Internet access. As it is, about 80 percent of its users are outside U.S. and Canada.

But if Facebook is to live up to its pre-IPO hype and reward the investors who are clamoring for its stock this week, it needs to convince some of the resisters to join. Two out of every five American adults have not joined Facebook, according to a recent Associated Press-CNBC poll. Among those who are not on Facebook, a third cited a lack of interest or need.

If all those people continue to shun Facebook, the social network could become akin to a postal system that only delivers mail to houses on one side of the street. The system isn't as useful, and people aren't apt to spend as much time with it. That means fewer opportunities for Facebook to sell ads.

Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, says that new communications channels ? from the telephone to radio, TV and personal computers ? often breed a cadre of holdouts in their early days.

"It's disorienting because people have different relationships with others depending on the media they use," Rainie says. "But we've been through this before. As each new communications media comes to prominence, there is a period of adoption."

Len Kleinrock, 77, says Facebook is fine for his grandchildren, but it's not for him.

"I do not want more distractions," he says. "As it is, I am deluged with email. My friends and colleagues have ready access to me and I don't really want another service that I would feel obliged to check into on a frequent basis."

Kleinrock says his resistance is generational, but discomfort with technology isn't a factor.

After all, Kleinrock is arguably the world's first Internet user. The University of California, Los Angeles professor was part of the team that invented the Internet. His lab was where researchers gathered in 1969 to send test data between two bulky computers ?the beginnings of the Arpanet network, which morphed into the Internet we know today.

"I'm having a 'been-there, done-that' feeling," Kleinrock says. "There's not a need on my part for reaching out and finding new social groups to interact with. I have trouble keeping up with those I'm involved with now."

Thomas Chin, 35, who works at an advertising and media planning company in New York, says he may be missing out on what friends-of-friends-of-friends are doing, but he doesn't need Facebook to connect with family and closer acquaintances.

"If we're going to go out to do stuff, we organize it (outside) of Facebook," he says.

Some people don't join the social network because they don't have a computer or Internet access, are concerned about privacy, or generally dislike Facebook. Those without a college education are less likely to be on Facebook, as are those with lower incomes. Women who choose to skip Facebook are more likely than men to cite privacy issues, while seniors are more likely than those 50-64 years old to cite computer issues, according the AP-CNBC poll.

About three-quarters of seniors are not on Facebook. By contrast, more than half of those under 35 use it every day.

The poll of 1,004 adults nationwide was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications May 3-7 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Steve Jones, a professor who studies online culture and communications at the University of Illinois at Chicago, says many resisters consider Facebook to be too much of a chore.

"We've added social networking to our lives. We haven't added any hours to our days," Jones says. "The decision to be online on Facebook is simultaneously a decision not to be doing something else."

Jones says many people on Facebook try to overcome that by multitasking, but they end up splitting their attention and engaging with others online only superficially.

Arwood, 47, a restaurant manager in Chicago, says she was surprised when colleagues on an English-teaching program in rural Spain in 2010 opted to spend their breaks checking Facebook.

"I spent my time on break trying to learn more about the Spanish culture, really taking advantage of it," she says. "I went on walks with some of the students and asked them questions."

Kariann Goldschmitt, 32, a music professor at New College of Florida in Sarasota, Fla., was on Facebook not long after its founding in 2004, but she quit in 2010. In part, it was because of growing concerns about her privacy and Facebook's ongoing encouragement of people to share more about themselves with the company, with marketers and with the world.

She says she's been much more productive since leaving.

"I was a typical user, on it once or twice a day," she says. "After a certain point, I sort of resented how it felt like an obligation rather than fun."

Besides Facebook resisters and quitters, there are those who take a break. In some cases, people quit temporarily as they apply for new jobs, so that potential employers won't stumble on photos of their wild nights out drinking. Although Facebook doesn't make it easy to find, it offers an option for suspending accounts (Look for a link under the "Security" tab in "Account Settings.")

Goldschmitt says it takes effort to stay in touch with friends and relatives without Facebook. For instance, she has to make mental notes of when her friends are expecting babies, knowing that they have become so used to Facebook "that they don't engage with us anymore."

"I'm like, 'Hmmm, when is nine months?' I have to remember to contact them since they won't remember to tell me when the baby's born."

Neil Robinson, 54, a government lawyer in Washington, says that when his nephew's son was born, pictures went up on Facebook almost immediately. As a Facebook holdout, he had to wait for someone to email photos.

After years of resisting, Robinson plans to join next month, mostly because he doesn't want to lose touch with younger relatives who choose Facebook as their primary means of communication.

But for every Robinson, there is an Edelstein, who has no desire for Facebook and prefers email and postcards.

"I prefer to keep my communications personal and targeted," says Jake Edelstein, 41, a pharmaceutical consultant in New York. "You're getting a message that's written for you. Clearly someone took the time to sit down to do it."

Half-Life: Opposing Force Is Still a Great Game, Even 13 Years Later

Posted: 16 May 2012 02:46 PM PDT

Who here has fond memories of playing Half-Life and it's expansions? I do. A little while ago, I decided to start up Opposing Force, the expansion from Gearbox where you play as a soldier that shows up at Black Mesa. I expected that I would simply play though the "boot camp" tutorial level again, and then be done. But before I knew it, I had begun a new game and was playing through it.

10 Questions Your Realtor Should Ask You | Simplify Your Home

? 10 Questions Your Realtor Should Ask You

When you are looking to purchase a new home, the process should be all about you. Your realtor should work within your budget, help you find a home that meets as many of your ?must-haves? as possible, and help identify potential problems. This usually means finding the right fit between you and your real estate agent. Since there are many agents who will vie for your attention, Simplify Your Home created a list of questions your real estate agent should ask you. If they don?t, it might be time to move on.

  1. Would you like to hear from some of my past customers? Yes, the agent will probably only suggest customers who had a positive experience, but you will still be able to learn a lot. Be sure to ask about their personality, ability to negotiate and expectations the agent has of their clients.
  2. Will this be your first home purchase? The answer could lead to more questions to help determine what financing opportunities the real estate agent might know of that you may not have come across yet.
  3. What is your budget for the home?s purchase? If your realtor doesn?t ask your budget or doesn?t stay close to your comfort level when she begins to show you homes, it could be time to switch agents.
  4. What is your budget for monthly home related expenses such as subdivision fees? This will help narrow down some listings. Also, if the real estate agent is already knowledgeable about where you would like to look, they can let you know if it is a realistic number for that area.
  5. What are your home must-haves? You probably already have an idea of what neighborhoods you would like to live in, if you want three or four bedrooms and which school district you want to live in. Be sure to communicate this to your real estate agent to help narrow down the search.
  6. Which of your must-haves are you willing to compromise? While you hope you will be able to get your dream home, realistically your budget or other home/neighborhood characteristics may narrow your choices. Consider which items you could compromise on and let your realtor know.
  7. What times and methods work best for me to contact you? It is important for your real estate agent to be able to work around your schedule. They should be courteous enough to ask which methods of communication work best for you too. For example, maybe you would like listings sent via email before your real estate agent calls to schedule a time to view the property.
  8. Do you mind if members of my team also work with you? Real estate agents often have larger teams that review listings, make appointments, etc. You will want to decide ahead of time if you prefer working with one agent or a team, and then explain your view to the real estate agents you?re interviewing.
  9. Did you notice x, y and z in the home? While your real estate agent should allow you to make the ultimate decision as to what house you purchase, it is also important that they notify you of items they believe could be potential problems.

10.? What did you like and what did you dislike about the home? When you begin viewing homes, your real estate agent should ask you why you liked or disliked a home. It will help them better gauge what listings to approach you with which maximizes everyone?s time. It might also help you better gauge what you truly want in a home.

If your agent asks these questions when you begin the hunt for a new home, you will be off to a great start and hopefully have a little less stress in the decision making process.

If you want to learn more about your new neighborhood, receive referrals to real estate agents and temporary housing professionals, and be eligible for cash back on the sale or purchase of your home, then CityPointe is for you!

Look out, kids: Windows 8 gives parents a computer-use report card

Microsoft

Windows 8 will let parents opt to receive a report card like this about their kids' computer activity.

Here?s a Windows 8 feature that?s sure to spark lots of conversations around the dinner table.

Gearing up for the ?Release Preview? of?the new operating system?next month, Microsoft this week detailed its plans for Windows 8?s family safety settings. One of the features lets parents receive a weekly email report that summarizes a child?s activities on the computer.?

It?s part of a free cloud-based Family Safety service, letting parents click a link in the email to change settings and restrictions based on what they see.?(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

The feature works in conjunction with the Microsoft account logins (formerly Windows Live ID) that will be used for signing in to Windows 8. Parents will be able to create separate logins for each child and then turn on the Family Safety settings to enable the feature.

Microsoft says it?s part of a new ?monitor first? approach for parents.

?We expect you?ll find activity reports a great tool for teaching your kids about responsible computer use,? writes Phil Sohn of Microsoft?s Family Safety team?in a blog post outlining the new features. ?With the simplicity of activity reports, we believe more parents will adopt Family Safety, resulting in a safer computing environment for children.?

Other new Family Safety features in Windows 8 include more fine-tuned controls for setting time limits on computer use, and the ability to prevent kids from seeing games above their age rating in the new Windows Store app market.

The new features will be included in the Windows 8 Release Preview,?slated to be issued in early June. Microsoft hasn?t yet given a final release date for Windows 8, but the new operating system is widely expected by the end of the year.

A home business is appealing but it is also very intimidating. Where can you begin? How do you make it work? It can be challenging because of the many questions involved. You?re in luck. This article will highlight some information that is crucial to maintaining and enhancing your home business.

Develop a regular schedule of time to devote to your work at home that is separate from your personal time. Set a time for your business to close, and stop working at that time every day. It is important to leave time for friends, family and even yourself.

Determine any and all fees for your services up front and stick with them, even when it might be tempting to give people ?deals?. Every business needs to make money in order to succeed, and yours is no exception. It is important to establish a clear payment system including proper invoicing and penalties for late payment.

You should use your business address rather than a post office box whenever possible. If you run the business from your home you should not use your home address for your business advertising. Customers prefer to interact with companies that add a more personal aspect to business. By doing this, you will not only relieve your customers? concerns about whether or not you will reply, but you will also be showing your dedication to them.

You need to to let your customers know if you have an item on back-order. Back-ordered products are a nuisance to customers, and it can really upset them. Be up front about items that aren?t in stock, so that customers can choose a different product and save the wait time.

Join a few online forums and discussion groups that focus on the subject of home business. A quick internet search will turn up quite a few good sites, and you can glean some wonderful information from them. Blogs are a wonderful source of information.

Make your home business a selling machine. Many people who run home-based businesses sell only in person. If you are doing this, you could lose a lot of internet sales. If you register at different sites you can do so cheaply.

To keep your tax bill low, track your business expenses. Include everything that you spend on your business, transportation and ISP service are common examples. You can deduct a lot of these expenses from your taxes when you have a business of your own. There is no reason to give your money away to the government. Keep track of all those little expenses. They could add up to big savings.

Cavaliers' Irving selected NBA's top rookie

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) ? Once Kyrie Irving finished cracking jokes, thanking Cleveland's fans, his teammates and coaches, he looked down from the podium at the person who promised this would happen.

He was the NBA's Rookie of the Year.

"This award is for us," Irving said to his father, Dred, who raised his son after his wife, Elizabeth, died 15 years ago. "We're bringing it back home and we're going to put it right on the mantle and we're going to put some flashing lights on it so it shines throughout the whole entire house."

This season, Irving shined brightest.

The 20-year-old ran away in voting by a nationwide media panel that could have handed in ballots with two months left in the season. There was really no other choice.

Irving received 117 of 120 possible first-place votes from writers and broadcasters and finished with 592 points, more than three times as many as Minnesota's Ricky Rubio (170), who finished second despite missing most of the season with a knee injury. Denver's Kenneth Faried (129) was a distant third.

Faried, San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard and New York's Iman Shumpert received the other first-place votes, stopping Irving from joining Blake Griffin (2011), David Robinson (1990) and Ralph Sampson (1984) as the only players to win the award unanimously.

Irving played beyond his years and above everyone's expectations ? including his own ? this season when he routinely took over games in the fourth quarter and renewed the hopes of a Cleveland franchise still putting together the pieces after LeBron James left as a free agent two summers ago.

Irving always felt the award was within his reach.

"It was a goal of mine," Irving said. "I kept it on the back burner. I knew as long as we won games and we beat great teams that it was going to come."

The first pick in last year's draft, Irving led all rookies ? and the Cavs ? in scoring with 18.5 points per game. He also led first-year players in field-goal percentage (46.8), was second in assists (5.4) and became one of just six rookies in league history to average at least 18 points and five assists.

However, it was the other elements of his game ? a nasty crossover dribble, a fearless desire to get to the basket, and a clutch, cold-blooded instinct in the fourth quarter ? that separated him from the others.

Cavs coach Byron Scott knew Irving was special long before he made his pro debut.

"The day we brought him in for his individual workout before the draft, I thought he was definitely the best player that we had," Scott said.

Still, Irving's first season, delayed because of the league's labor lockout, began with some doubting whether he was deserving of the top pick or if Cleveland had made a mistake. Irving had played in just 11 games at Duke because of a toe injury.

It didn't take him long for him to show the Cavs made a perfect choice.

"When they drafted me, there were a lot of questions about my toe and everything, would he live up to the hype or whatever," he said. "I didn't pay any attention to all that, just being in these closed doors helped me have a vision and be focused every single day. I wasn't the most heralded No. 1 pick. I had my own goals and I had my own team goals."

Irving made spectacular moves and game-winning shots and earned MVP honors at the Rising Stars game during All-Star weekend in Orlando. But when asked what moment stood above all the others in a magical first season, Irving had a surprise answer.

It came, of all places, in a huddle during a timeout at Indianapolis.

With 4.4 seconds left and the Cavaliers tied 84-84 with the Pacers, Scott, who has formed a tight bond with his young star point guard, drew up a play for Irving to take the last shot even though he was playing just his third game as a pro.

"I was surprised," Irving said. "We kind of knew each other. I didn't really know the bald-headed man. I just knew that when he told me it was a high screen and roll, I was like, 'I'm going to do my best to get to the basket.'"

Irving's left-handed layup rolled out, and the Cavs lost in overtime. But Irving knew that from that moment on that the Cavaliers were his team and that Scott expected him to lead them.

"Just him having that confidence in me was a stepping stone for me," he said. "It was a learning experience, and I needed it."

A month later in Boston, with his father sitting courtside, Irving made up for the miss at Indiana. With the Cavs down by one, Irving, ignoring his failure in the previous situation, drove to the basket, split two defenders and flipped in a left-handed layup to beat the Celtics.

Irving arrived with none of the superstar trappings. There was no entourage or multimillion dollar shoe contract, no cameras chronicling his every move. He often tossed the praise on others and minimized his role in victories.

"One of his biggest attributes ? you can ask all of his teammates ? he's willing to give up a little bit of himself for the greater good of the team," said general manager Chris Grant. "That's truly what makes great leaders. That's what makes great people and great players."

Irving appears to be the major piece the Cavs can build around, and they plan to get him some help next month with three of the top 34 picks in the draft.

"He's great and the way he carries himself is really remarkable," said Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who opened his downtown casino Monday night. "He's 20 years old. He can't have a drink legally or come into our casino but he can do everything else."

Irving, too, is excited about the future in Cleveland.

"I know what we're building here is something special," he said, "and I'm here for the long haul."

Washington fires back at Valentine

With interleague play beginning on Friday at Houston, Rangers pitchers will be ready for the play that Boston manager Bobby Valentine said changed the World Series last fall.

Rangers pitchers had their third day of batting practice on Tuesday, and the session included the ``slash'' play. Valentine started spring training this year by having Red Sox pitchers work on the ``slash.'' In a sacrifice situation, pitchers are to pull back and slash the pitch if the corner infielders charge.

Valentine said the failure of Rangers right-hander Colby Lewis to ``slash'' led to the Rangers' undoing in Game 6 and cost them the World Series. Batting at runners at first and second with none out in the second inning, Lewis bunted into a rally-killing double play.

Valentine's observation rankled Rangers manager Ron Washington. He repeated that Lewis should have ``slashed'' but did not pick up on the crashing infielders.

``Bobby runs his team, and I run this one,'' Washington said. ``If a pitcher is not used to being at the plate and when that situation arises he doesn't react to it, that doesn't mean it wasn't a part of what we do. He didn't react to it.

``It's hard for someone to say we should have slashed and they don't even know if it was on.''

In interleague play last season, Rangers pitchers had one sacrifice, by C.J. Wilson, in 25 plate appearances. They had six sacrifices, a combined five by Wilson and Darren Oliver, in the World Series. Wilson and Oliver left the club as free agents after the season.

Lenovo shows off ThinkStation E31 workstation in two different sizes

Image

Don't let that headline fool you: although Lenovo technically just unveiled one product, the ThinkStation E31 workstation, it actually shoehorned two distinct machines into one press release. Behold: a budget workstation available as a conventionally sized tower, as well as compact one. Whichever you choose, both support up to 32GB of RAM and are available with either an Intel Xeon E3-1200 CPU or a range of Ivy Bridge processors. Regardless of the size, you'll get nine USB ports, including four of the 3.0 variety. And, in addition to Windows 7 / XP, they're Windows 8-ready, and can run Red Hat as well.

It's at this juncture, though, that the specs start to diverge, with the heftier machine naturally offering more expandability. The full-size tower, for instance, can accommodate up to three HDDs, or 9TB of hard drive storage, while the smaller number makes room for two HDDs, or 6TB of space. (Either way, you can opt for solid-state drives.) On the graphics front, both will be offered with Intel's HD P4000 solution, but the upgrade options once again differ: expect a max offering of NVIDIA Quadro Q4000 graphics on the tower, and Quadro Q600 on the smaller guy. Intrigued? Both systems will start at $629, with the fuller-sized tower arriving on June 5th and the compact model following on June 13th.

Report: Thompson Out, Media Man Levinsohn In As Yahoo?s Interim CEO

YahoologoWe're still confirming the news with Yahoo but AllThingsD's Kara Swisher is reporting that as of tomorrow, Scott Thompson will be leaving his role as CEO of Yahoo, and getting replaced, on an interim basis, by Ross Levinsohn, currently the global media head. Thompson's position has been mired in controversy since news broke the other week that he had lied about his qualifications -- and that situation seemed to be going from bad to worse as the company failed to act on the news in any significant way -- and Thompson remained in control. Some may even find the method in which he is finally going unsatisfactory: the company will apparently cite "personal reasons" for his departure, according to AllThingsD.

Seriously ... that's according to the seller.

Tyson Beckford Photo

During the hot chat session, Tyson Beckford supposedly makes references to some of the movies he's appeared in, and talks about some of his co-stars.

He also says his pet peeve is being mistaken for Tyrese Gibson. That we believe.

A rep for Beckford says his camp has not seen the footage and will not release any statement until they can view the material being shopped around.

Slow year for these things so far. Other celebrity sex tape stars in the news in recent months? Hulk Hogan, John Edwards, Gordon Ramsay and 2Pac.
