Mitt Romney to make his case: 'Need jobs, lots of jobs'

TAMPA, Fla. - Mitt Romney launched his fall campaign for the White House in a Republican National Convention finale Thursday night, declaring "what America needs is jobs, lots of jobs" and promising he has a plan to create 12 million of them.

"Now is the time to restore the promise of America," Romney said in excerpts released in advance of his prime-time speech to a nation struggling with 8.3 percent unemployment and the slowest economic recovery in decades.

"Many Americans have given up on this president, but they haven't ever thought about giving up. Not on themselves, Not on each other. And not on America," Romney said.

Romney muted his criticism in the advance excerpts of President Barack Obama, his quarry in a close and unpredictable race for the White House.

"I wish President Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed," he said. "But his promises gave way to disappointment and division."

"This isn't something we have to accept," he said, appealing to millions of voters who say they are disappointed in the president yet haven't yet decided to cast their votes for his Republican challenger.

In a speech that blended the political and the personal, Romney talked in his excerpts of the importance of the love he felt from his parents and that he and his wife Ann have sought to give their children and grandchildren.

"All the laws and legislation in the world will never heal this world like the loving hearts and arms of mothers and fathers," he said.

Yet the economy is issue No. 1 in the race for the White House, and Romney presented his credentials as the man better equipped than the president to help create jobs.

"When I was 37, I helped start a small company," he said. "That business we stated with 10 people has now grown into a great American success story."

More than the political hoopla, the evening marked one of a very few opportunities any presidential challenger is granted to appeal to millions of voters in a single night.

The two-month campaign to come includes other big moments ? principally a series of one-on-one debates with Democrat Obama ? in a race for the White House that has been close for months. In excess of $500 million has been spent on campaign television commercials so far, almost all of it in the battleground states of Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada.

Romney holds a fundraising advantage over Obama, and his high command hopes to expand the electoral map soon if post-convention polls in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and perhaps elsewhere indicate it's worth the investment.

Romney's aides scripted a Thursday night program that included a video tribute to Ronald Reagan, the two-term president revered still by conservatives. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush also had his moment on the podium, and Newt and Callista Gingrich shared one of their own.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was tapped to introduce Romney.

Romney aides said the convention's final night was designed to fill out a portrait of the GOP nominee as a successful businessman, last-minute savior for a troubled 2002 Olympics and a man of family and faith. A portion of the convention podium was rebuilt overnight so he would appear surrounded by delegates rather than speaking from a distance, an attempt to soften his image as a stiff and distant candidate.

But these aides did not say whether he would offer any new information on what has so far been a short-on-details pledge to reduce federal deficits and create 12 million jobs in a country where unemployment stands at 8.3 percent.

Romney has called for extension of tax cuts due to expire at all income levels at the end of the year, and has proposed an additional 20 percent cut in tax rates across the board. But he has yet to sketch out the retrenchment in tax breaks that he promises to prevent deficits from rising.

Nor has he been forthcoming about the trillions in spending cuts that would be needed to redeem his pledge of major deficit reduction, or about his promise to rein in Medicare or other government benefit programs before they go broke.

His vice presidential running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, has called for remaking Medicare into a program in which the government would send seniors checks to be used to purchase health care insurance.

Under the current approach, beneficiaries pay premiums to the government, which then pays a part of all of their medical bills, and Democrats say the GOP alternative would expose seniors to ever-rising out-of-pocket costs.

Romney said in his fundraising email, as he often does in his speeches, "We believe in America, even though President Barack Obama's failed policies have left us with record high unemployment, lower take-home pay and the weakest economy since the great Depression."

Obama's surrogates missed no opportunity to criticize Romney, the convention proceedings or Ryan's own acceptance speech.

"He lied about Medicare. He lied about the Recovery Act," Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, emailed Democratic donors in a plea for cash.

"He lied about the deficit and debt. He even dishonestly attacked Barack Obama for the closing of a GM plant in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin ? a plant that closed in December 2008 under George W. Bush."

For Romney, 65 and the first Mormon to become a major party presidential nominee, the evening sealed a triumph more than five years in the making. He ran unsuccessfully for the nomination in 2008 after a single term as a moderate Republican governor of a liberal Democratic state.

This year, as then, he was assailed as a convert to conservatism, and a questionable one at that, as Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and other rivals battled him for the nomination. With a superior organization and an outside group that spent millions criticizing his foes, Romney eventually emerged as the nominee in early spring.

His selection of Ryan, a young lawmaker admired by fellow conservatives for his understanding of the federal budget, reinforced Romney's appeal to the right.

The economy alone makes the race a close one, and polling makes clear that Romney enters the fall campaign with strengths and weaknesses.

In the most recent Associated Press-GfK poll, conducted Aug. 16-20, some 48 percent of registered voters said Romney would do a better job handling the economy, while 44 percent chose Obama. The Republican was also favored narrowly on job creation and held a 10-point advantage on the issue of reducing federal budget deficits.

Yet by 51-36, registered voters said Obama better understands the problems of people like them, that the president is a stronger leader and also a more honest and trustworthy candidate.

Polls also show Romney trails Obama among female voters and Hispanics, and the convention was scripted from beginning to end to try and cut into the GOP ticket's disadvantages in those areas.

The first night of the GOP convention drew an estimated 22.3 million TV viewers, the vast majority over 55. The Nielsen ratings company said that figure was down from the 23.1 million who watched the first full night of the 2008 convention, which nominated John McCain. Nielsen said just 1.5 million of those who watched Tuesday's convention session were in the 18-34 age group.

Ultimate Fighter cast includes a former TUF coach and plenty of drama between Dana White and Roy Nelson

Nearly every season since the UFC created the reality series 'The Ultimate Fighter,' UFC president Dana White raves about the bouts and promises it will be the "best season ever." That's the promoter in him.

But as the 15th season is about to begin, White's focus is slightly different. The series, now known as 'The Ultimate Fighter Fridays,' seems to be as much about the battle between White and coach Roy Nelson as it is about the fighters or Nelson's upcoming fight with opposing coach Shane Carwin.

The series will return to the taped format on Sept. 14 with a two-hour special that will include all 16 fights to get into the house. The season features welterweight fighters, including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Cameron Diffley, who served as the jiu jitsu instructor when Forrest Griffin was the coach.

There have been plenty of times a fighter has fought on the show and then coached, but this might be the first time a man coached and then showed up as the contestant.

But the big news seems to be about the battles between White and the outspoken Nelson, the winner of Season 10.

"Carwin and Nelson are two guys who just can't stand each other and Roy and I haven't exactly seen eye to eye either," White said in a statement. "He's been a nightmare for me to work with on this show with all of his stupid b.s."

Nelson kicked things off in an interview with MMA Junkie in which he publicly blasted White. That is big news in and of itself, since so few of the UFC fighters are willing to take White on publicly.

Nelson, though, had no such qualms. He tore into White in an interview with MMA Junkie's Steven Marrocco.

It's probably because he wants to be a fighter, and he's not

Nelson continued to poke at White, painting himself as a guy looking to carry the sport to the next level.

I'm always at the back of the bus when it comes to the UFC. I'm just trying to further MMA to the next level, hold journalism up to higher standards, holding fights to higher standards, holding promotions to higher standards, holding athletic commissions to higher standards, and even holding the fans to higher standards.

White responded to Nelson following the UFC on Fox 4 card in Los Angeles, telling MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that Nelson "is a huge pain in the [expletive]."

The dynamic between White and Nelson may wind up being the highlight of the season.

The 32 fighters who will compete on Sept. 14 for the 16 slots in the house and the chance at the UFC contract are:

Attacks in Iraq kill general and 4 others

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi authorities say a one-star general is among five security officials who killed in a series of attacks.

Police said Brig. Gen. Nadhum Tayeh was driving to work early Wednesday when a carload of gunmen opened fire on him in Baghdad.

Hours later, authorities said an off-duty army colonel was killed in a roadside bombing in northern Baghdad. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity in both cases because they were not authorized to release the information.

The deadliest attack of the day came in the city of Kirkuk, where three policemen were killed and six wounded. City police Cmdr. Sarhad Qadir said their convoy hit another roadside bomb.

Kirkuk is 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

Security forces are a top target for insurgents seeking to destabilize Iraq.

SEAL book raises questions about bin Laden's death

This book cover image released by Dutton shows "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama Bin Laden," by Mark Owen with Kevin Maurer. A first-hand account of the Navy SEAL mission that killed Osama bin Laden is coming out Sept. 11. Dutton announced Wednesday that Mark Owen?s ?No Easy Day? will ?set the record straight? on the raid in Pakistan in May 2011. ?Mark Owen? is a pseudonym for the combat veteran who was one of the first fighters to enter bin Laden?s third floor hideout and also witnessed his death, according to Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA). (AP Photo/Dutton)

(AP) ? A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.

Bin Laden apparently was hit in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in "No Easy Day." The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a "point man" going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. "Less than five steps" from top of the stairs, he heard "suppressed" gunfire: "BOP. BOP." The point man had seen a "man peeking out of the door" on the right side of the hallway.

The author writes that bin Laden ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the terrorist crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner and he and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sites on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless. The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

In the account related by administration officials after the raid in Pakistan, the SEALs shot bin Laden only after he ducked back into the bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor would not comment on the apparent contradiction late Tuesday. But he said in an email, "As President Obama said on the night that justice was brought to Osama bin Laden, 'We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.'"

"No Easy Day" was due out Sept. 11, but Dutton announced the book would be available a week early, Sept. 4, because of a surge of orders due to advance publicity that drove the book to the top of the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com best-seller lists.

The Associated Press purchased a copy of the book Tuesday.

The account is sure to again raise questions as to whether the raid was intended to capture or simply to kill bin Laden. Bissonette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, a lawyer from "either" the White House or Defense Department told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said that if bin Laden was "naked with his hands up," they should not "engage" him. If bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should "detain him."

In another possibly uncomfortable revelation for U.S. officials who say bin Laden's body was treated with dignity before being given a full Muslim burial at sea, the author reveals that in the cramped helicopter flight out of the compound, one of the SEALs called "Walt" ? one of the pseudonyms the author used for his fellow SEALs ? was sitting on bin Laden's chest as the body lay at the author's feet in the middle of the cabin, for the short flight to a refueling stop inside Pakistan where a third helicopter was waiting.

This is common practice, as troops sometimes must sit on their own war dead in packed helicopters. Space was cramped because one of the helicopters had crashed in the initial assault, leaving little space for the roughly two dozen commandos in the two aircraft that remained. When the commandos reached the third aircraft, bin Laden's body was moved to it.

Bissonnette writes disparagingly that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the May 2011 raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid.

But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

Bissonnette writes less flatteringly of meeting Vice President Joe Biden along with Obama at the headquarters of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment after the raid. He says Biden told "lame jokes" no one understood, reminding him of "someone's drunken uncle at Christmas dinner."

Beyond such embarrassing observations, U.S. officials fear the book may include classified information, as it did not undergo the formal review required by the Pentagon for works published by former or current Defense Department employees.

Officials from the Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information and could take legal action against the author.

In a statement provided to The Associated Press, the author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to The Associated Press.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

Exercise is Medicine: Marketing Fitness to the Health Care Community

Elizabeth Studebaker, Senior Marketing Manager, Club One

Less than 20 percent of hospitals are currently equipped to meet the new wellness and prevention mandates within Health Care Reform. This presents a new opportunity for fitness centers to open their doors to unlikely joiners and extend the continuum of care in partnership with your neighborhood hospital and medical offices. Here are a few tips for marketing your fitness center to the health care industry and its community.

Gain industry advocates.

Offer complimentary workouts to all health care professionals during a week-long open house, and invite employees of nearby hospitals, dental offices and physical therapy centers. Showcase your fitness and wellness services, highlighting the benefits of regular exercise. Consider a special corporate rate for individuals in the health care industry ? as they start leading healthier lifestyles, they will encourage their patients to do the same.

Exercise is better than a pill.

It?s no secret that exercise fends off health risks, improves moods and builds a healthy mind, body and spirit ? and the medical community is taking notice. Create prescriptions pads for doctors to prescribe fitness programming to their patients. Include your club?s contact details so the patient knows who to contact directly to help them get started on their doctor?s orders.

Perform wellness outreach.

Partner with your local hospital to offer free guest services to patients and their families on the hospital?s campus. Wellness classes like foam rolling, stress management, chair massage or even group exercise sessions, add to the brand value of the hospital and introduces your fitness center to potential members. Bring club collateral and encourage participants to drop their business card to enter to win a one-month membership.

Maintain visibility.

Hospitals have patient newsletters, employee bulletins and common areas such as waiting rooms, break rooms, cafeterias and pharmacies. Ask about opportunities to display an exercise of the month poster in these areas or publish wellness tips in ongoing communications.

Partner with insurance groups.

Insurance groups are spending more and more money on unhealthy individuals. Partner with these groups to send their customers health and wellness resources and a special offer to join your fitness center.

August may be the laziest month for Hollywood blockbusters, but it has become open season?for little-films-that-can. And this year is no exception, with the political documentary ?2016: Obama?s America,? pulling in more than $9 million to become the top grossing non-nature documentary of the year.

The film, from conservative author Dinesh D?Souza, which began playing in theaters nationwide this past weekend and has gone viral online, is a slow ? and selective ? trip through Obama?s backstory. It?leads viewers to the narrator?s conclusion that the president?s goals are to realize his Kenyan father?s anti-imperialist dreams.

The documentary is currently screening in Tampa hotels hosting guests at the Republican National Convention, where its themes have been warmly embraced.

But the real question is, at this late date, will such a film make a difference in an election that by most accounts will be determined by a razor-thin margin of voters who have yet to make up their minds?

The film most likely will not sway many independent voters directly, says David Mark, editor in chief of Politix, an online and mobile site for citizen?s input, and author of ?Going Dirty: the Art of Negative Campaigning.? But, says Mr. Mark, a former senior editor of POLITICO, where the film might have an impact is in the nitty-gritty of an election.

?It could energize the base into all the kinds of things that can turn out voters, like walking the precinct, manning phone banks, and all the kinds of volunteer stuff that juices up supporters,? he points out.

Soon-to-be Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be the most likely to benefit, adds Mark, who says the film has been a hot topic on conservative talk radio, where hosts have been urging supporters to go see the film. ?Everyone likes to say they don?t want negative campaigning and movies like this, but the truth is that the reason we continue to have it is because it works,? he says, adding, ?negativity gets people to participate.?

The surprise success of the film suggests it is part of a ?new normal? in US politics, says John Johannes, a professor of political science at Villanova University in Philadelphia.

Filmmaker Michael Moore ?probably should be credited (or blamed) with advancing this type of political advertising, an effort to add a veneer of respectability and authority to coat anti-candidate politics,? Professor Johannes says via e-mail. This type of politicking is more likely to appeal to those already committed for or against Obama, he notes, adding that he would be surprised if this movie changed any minds.

?It is, however, yet another indicator of what is happening to American politics,? he says: ?Trying to pin down candidates for their backgrounds more than their policies; a focus on personalities more than issues; and a play to anger and fear rather than to thoughtfulness and judgment.?

But some say this film suggests otherwise ? that this election may actually hinge on more than negativity, says journalist John Graves, editor of The Retirement Journal and author of ?The 7% Solution.?

Mr. Graves says he and his wife went to the film over the weekend.

?The film itself was instructive for its view from outside the inner workings of the US politic,? he says via e-mail, adding that it was valuable to witness what he dubs ?the raw exploitation of power by a man who knows himself and his destiny very well.? Beyond that, he says, ?if the issues as described in the film are also descriptive of the ?whole piece? landscape, it will be a metaphysical election (one guided by principles).?

The film?s power may also be a harbinger of things to come, points out April Masini, online advice expert at askapril.com.

She says a large part of the audience will be already-decided Republican voters, those ?who want verification that they're doing the right thing, and something to talk about among themselves.? But the valuable audience, she points out, will be those undecided voters who can make or break a popular vote in a close race.

But she adds, ?The anti-Obama documentary will also be a measure of how important films and documentaries are to swinging a vote in the age of fast technology like Twitter, e-mail and tabloid news. If this documentary is perceived as being effective, buckle up for more politicians in Hollywood.??

What?s In A Name? $1M, If You?re Called MobileApps.com. And At Least One Big Fish May Bite, Says CEO

mobileapps.com shutdown noticeThe market for mobile apps is booming -- but not, it seems, for MobileApps.com, one of the many app aggregating marketplaces that have been set up in the last several years to ride that wave. The Singapore-based site that used to sit at that address has closed down after "failing to find traction," according to a Facebook announcement from its CEO and founder Alvin Koay (via?Tech In Asia). And the domain MobileApps.com is now up for sale starting at $1 million. Koay tells TechCrunch that a big company (and I mean big) is currently negotiating with his brokers on a deal. (We can't report the name, lest it impact the negotiations if it really is true. If it is, it's a big coup and has some interesting implications.) Koay says he is selling the domain because the business is pivoting from a consumer concern to one focused on a B2B offering -- specifically around rich media ads, which it will sell under the similarly literally-named RichMediaAds.com, due to launch in a few weeks.?"With the shift of focus from B2C to B2B, the consumer-centric domain name does not serve its purpose any more and will be sold," the company said in a statement.

Minglers Nut hot favourite to win at Hall Green

Minglers Nut is expected to walk away with a comfortable victory in a 480 metres flat race at Hall Green in England on Monday, August 27, 2012. She has been delivering some decent results with consistency and it will be difficult for her opponents to stop her from winning the cash prize of ?122 in the end.

There are some very good runners lined up for action in the Grade A2 race, but most of them lack the winning momentum right now. This means that they will be less confident compared to the favourite bitch, who will enter the event with a starting price of 2 to 1.

The bookmakers expect Memories Control to be tough in the race, as he seems to have the speed to fight for victory. He has not been winning a lot with consistency, but that does not mean that he is not capable of doing so. He has been given a general starting price of 11 to 4 and the punters will definitely be interested in placing a few bets on him.

However, most of the bettors will be risking their money in favour of Minglers Nut, who has enjoyed a very good time during the 2012 season. She has always been competitive, but the most important thing is her ability to take the top spot regularly. She has always raced at Hall Green and will be fully aware of the conditions at this venue.

The S. Buckland?s trained bitch debuted in May 2011 and was impressive in the trial events she took part in. She won her maiden race in June that year and did not look back from then onwards. The bookies had rated her as the favourite to succeed and she lived up to their expectations in the end.

Things kept on going nicely for the white and black bitch and she became a reliable runner by the end of her debut season. She struggled to some extent at the start of 2012, but regained form and started winning races once again.

Out of her previous five outings, Royal Impact?s daughter out of Minglers Return has managed to win thrice, which shows the kind of form she is in at the moment. She will definitely make it hard for her rivals to come anywhere close to her today.

How do I end the twin soul separation and struggle phase?

Even though you have met your twin soul, there are no guarantees that everything will work smoothly from that day on. (Luckily, there?s also no guarantees that it won?t!) The separation phase is often explained by karmic debt, but we have a different idea on that. This post applies to both twin souls who have already met and those who haven?t met yet.

The old school new age teaches that to make it possible for twin soul couples to be together, they have to be free of all karma. That is a troublesome concept for two reasons. One has to do with non-automatic reincarnation which makes karma unnecessary, secondly, and more importantly, if you look at twin soul couples who are happily together? Do we trust all of them have ?made good? all their bad deeds? I can?t even begin to imagine the amount of bad karma the normal smugness of having found your twin soul the thinking pattern ?this is the reward for my good deeds and high soul age level? would rake up. Your twin soul isn?t a reward for good behaviour or ?enlightenment?, you better get away from that thinking because it?s simply not healthy. If you understand karma in the context that you don?t exactly have to do anything to clear it, but just ?live it through? this makes you sit and wait for some indefinite time frame until you feel it?s right? Or not.

What happens has everything to do with psychology and the law of attraction. If you understand the basis of the law of the attraction, in short, in this context, it can be summed up as ?you get what you believe you deserve?. If deep down you think that you don?t deserve to be loved, the settling karma -thinking would allow you to get around it by ?I have now suffered enough to deserve happiness in the end.? Your time would be better spent on self-improvement, self-empowerment, and clearing your mind from defeating attitudes and negativity. You don?t need to do this in the context of twin souls, but any normal psychologist will be able to help you here. If you are not that way inclined, any life coaching resource might help you, self-help books and simple self-reflection as to what are the reasons that you feel your twin soul doesn?t, can?t or won?t love you, or why you can?t find him in the first place. (It sounds like a different thing if you have met your twin or not but both situations are related. If you haven?t met your twin soul yet, it?s simply because you believe things like this don?t happen to people like you.)

?Get ready for love? does sound a lot simpler than ?align myself with my twin soul? doesn?t it? When you think about it this way, you may have a bit of a chuckle. We do like to mystify things, don?t we? :p The truth is that the twin soul relationship is mysterious and complicated enough as it is, we don?t need to complicate it further. I believe the mystification comes from the need to explain to others that ?my love is bigger than your love?, and although all of us know the difference when it?s your true twin, we also know that people who haven?t experienced this have absolutely no clue. Sorry I am rambling.

What we must do for ourselves before our twin soul relationship can work we need to get rid of any insecurities, doubt and bitterness we might harbour. These things don?t obstruct normal relationships because we are not as afraid of screwing it up and being told that we are no longer loved. There?s nothing more mysterious to it than that. The twin soul connection will freak out even the most confident of us, and put us face to face with our own failures. We must work on our self-esteem, to learn exactly what is keeping us from either giving love or accepting love. Please note that if one of you is perfectly fine with who they are, the other one will have SO MUCH EASIER TIME accepting your relationship even if they hadn?t worked on their issues yet. This happens, because a person who is happy within themselves will never have to retort. They can take rejection, blow ups, fuck ups and all the fury of Hell from their twin flame and not blink, and unless the twin soul is absolutely torn to pieces by their personal experiences, this is usually enough to keep them together and the hurting twin will be able to heal themselves with the help of the whole one.

To fast track your own healing, it would be a great idea to seek counselling from a relationship life coach or a psychologist. These are very practical solutions to what seems to be a mysterious problem but really isn?t. Remember that all-consuming love is not the privilege of only those who hold new age beliefs. There is also nothing telling that you shouldn?t seek couple?s therapy if you are struggling to hold onto each other.

For the cheap, ;) the DYI folk and those who like things mysterious, you need to be very courageous in looking into your own psyche and finding out your own issues for yourself. I would highly recommend you contacting your soul and ask help in clearing out your internal drama. If you ask this, remember that the answers you hear will be what you NEED to hear, not what you want to hear, and even if it didn?t make sense, keep going and TRY to make sense out of it. I would suggest the pendulum for this as a tool.

Weather Delays Two NASA Launches

There are lots of reasons for weather delays of rocket launches, but one of them is wind. I've been told (by actual rocket scientists, with only a few Green Martians* in them at the time) that there are two critical factors related to wind -- the wind speed itself and its variability, i.e., gusts -- and that the reasons both trace back to the limitations of the directional-control system of the engines (i.e., the gimbals) and the guidance system of the rocket.

The limitation on maximum wind speed is related to the range of control of the engines (i.e., how many degrees off the axis of the rocket the engines can point), since that eventually works back to how large a wind-compensating vector is available to the guidance system. The gust limitation is related to the response speed (slew rate) of the engine gimbals, since that eventually works back to how fast the guidance system can respond to changes in wind speed and/or direction.

Fresh Ideas And Tips For Home Improvement Projects

What is your skill set like? Is what you're using working with your home? Are you sure you are installing things properly? If you cannot answer these questions confidently, look at the tips below.

Cleaning your decanter can be made quite easy with the following steps. Fill up your decanter up with hot water halfway and add several drops of dishwashing liquid inside. Add two or three tablespoons of vinegar and one cup of raw rice (doesn't matter what type). Swirl the concoction in your decanter until clean. The rice helps rub off the excess dirt while you're swirling the liquid.

Use family members and friends as great aids in your home improvement projects. With family and friends, you can cut the need for help from a professional that could cost quite a bit, while you also get a great deal of fun from the project. Also, you will find that they come in handy in the clean up portion of the project.

Use scribe pieces to fill in any gaps that you may have when installing cabinets. Use them along the wall to make sure that the drawers are not going to get hung up on the wall or cause a gouge in your wall. This allows for a neat finish along the wall, and will help disguise any curves in the wall.

Protect surfaces with a covering during any home improvement projects. Floors should be covered with a tarp or painters plastic if you are painting. For other projects that involve hammering or tearing down walls or cabinets, cover all surfaces to protect them from scratches and damage, including the walls.

Windows

Older awnings over porches and windows can greatly detract from the appearance of your home. By removing them, you are updating your house with a more modern look that allows its distinctive character to shine through. Furthermore, you will find that more natural light enters your house through the windows, brightening the mood.

Always select energy-efficient windows for home improvement projects. Modern windows conserve energy in a variety of ways, from special glass coatings to tight-sealing gaskets. The most efficient of modern double-glazed windows even have noble-gas-filled glazing cavities to prevent heat transmission. High-tech windows can help the homeowner realize significant savings on heating and cooling.

Interesting information for you could be the one about Velfac Fenster.

Before rolling paint onto walls or ceilings, cut in the edges with a brush. Tape off trim, moldings, windows, ceiling edges and fixtures. By painting the few inches closest to the edges using a brush, you do not have to roll right up to these obstacles which may prove too cumbersome with a full-sized paint roller.

Are you more informed when it comes to home improvement? Do you have plan that works now? Have your skills improved? Can you now use things that work with your home? Do you know how to properly install things? With any luck, the tips above should have helped you answer these questions.

D-list actor allegedly threatens Harvey Weinstein's family

An aspiring actor who allegedly made death threats against Harvey Weinstein's family in an attempt to extort $4 million from the film producer has been arrested by federal agents.

Vivek Shah, 25, was living in West Hollywood, Calif., while trying to launch a career in film and television. The Akron, Ohio, native, whose biggest claims to fame are bit parts on "Bones," "Outsourced" and an unaccredited role in "The Dark Knight," attempted a fast-track to fortune by allegedly shaking down one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, among other powerful magnates.

Shah is accused of sending menacing letters not only to Weinstein, the Oscar-winning producer of "Shakespeare in Love," but also to four other millionaire tycoons, including a coal magnate, an oil executive and the owner of an NHL team.

"Each of these letters contained a threat to kill named members of the recipient's family unless a large sum of money was wired to an offshore bank account," Postal Inspector Joshua Mehall said in a sworn affidavit.

Weinstein is not named in the affidavit, but the 60-year-old co-chairman of The Weinstein Co. is described as "a Connecticut resident and co-founder of a film studio." Weinstein lives in Westport, Conn., where he recently hosted a $35,800-per-person fundraising event for Barack Obama.

Also allegedly targeted by Shah was coal magnate Christopher Cline, who is worth an estimated $1.5 billion, and from whom Shah allegedly attempted to extort $13 million. The affidavit signed by Mehall indicated that a letter sent to Cline contained "wiring instructions for a bank in Cyprus."

(WireImage/Getty Images)Although his acting resume is thin, Shah, a self-described "entrepreneur" and film producer, can be seen photographed in shots posted on his Facebook profile and IMDb page alongside some of Hollywood's elite actors, including Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Zach Galifianakis and many others.

Shah was arrested Aug. 10 by federal agents at his parents' home near Chicago after he was named in a U.S. District Court complaint for allegedly sending threatening interstate communications. He is being held without bail in West Virginia, which is where one of his alleged targets lives.

According to documents posted on The Smoking Gun, Shah was "scheduled for training in handgun shooting" at a gun range in Los Angeles, investigators say.

Shah was born in Ohio, but moved to India for 10 years with his family before returning to the United States, according to his IMDb profile. He studied at Columbia College Chicago and later at the Chicago Actors Studio and Chicago's Second City Training Center.

If convicted of the felony charges, Shah faces a maximum 20-year prison term.

UC Riverside's Glenn Hicks teaches a genomics workshop in Dhaka but learns a lot more

RIVERSIDE, Calif. Before he left for Bangladesh to conduct a workshop this summer, Glenn Hicks of the University of California, Riverside did not quite know what to expect. What he knew was that he would be leading a workshop, called "Workshop on Genomics and Proteomics," from July 16 through July 24 at the University of Dhaka, the premier public university in Bangladesh. What his brief visit to that country's capital taught him, though, was that education is critical for all of our futures and that with patience education could help overcome even great cultural and economic differences.

Aimed at providing an overview of genomics and proteomics, the workshop, the first of its kind that UC Riverside has offered in Bangladesh, was funded by the World Bank and hosted by the University of Dhaka's Botany Department.

"I learned early in the workshop that the faculty and students were aware of genomics and proteomics, but not in terms of a practical understanding of the technologies, theories and practice," said Hicks, an academic administrator of facilities at UCR's Institute for Integrative Genome Biology and an associate research plant cell biologist. "So an important goal was to present and discuss how these modern approaches can be utilized in a useful manner towards problems of interest to Bangladesh.

"I learned, too, that many of the research projects in the department were biotechnology-oriented towards solving problems that are important for, and in some cases unique to, Bangladesh projects like plant virus and fungal disease resistance, bioremediation, and production of biomass for feeds and fertilizers," he added.

Hicks found that although the University of Dhaka is a large university, its infrastructure is limited in terms of opportunities for the most up-to-date research and postgraduate studies utilizing advanced methods and technologies. For example, the laboratories he toured had basic equipment for molecular biology research, but access to advanced instrumentation was limited. Still, the students and faculty were eager to learn, he found, and sincere in their desire for more high-quality research.

"They have a strong hunger for more contemporary knowledge and hands-on scientific training," Hicks said. "Many of the faculty are smart and forward looking. They are acutely aware of the need to target new areas for learning. While some of the highest-technology equipment is not available to them as yet, procuring knowledge is what matters as a start. From there, meaningful projects and focused infrastructure can follow. This was noted by the vice chancellor of the University of Dhaka, Professor Siddique, whom I was able to meet. He was very supportive of future interactions with UCR."

The trip to Bangladesh, his first, was an opportunity for Hicks to make a significant contribution beyond the UCR campus. An early difference he made there was getting the workshop participants to ask questions in the ten lectures he presented.

"In the United States, we have this tradition of challenging and arguing constructively," he said. "We encourage this, and it is a resource that can drive scientific inquiry. The impression from my visit is that Bangladesh is a more formal, perhaps hierarchal society, and it is a challenge for students to step out of their traditional role. It takes some effort to get students to speak up and engage in open discussion."

His encouragement and teaching style paid off. After his first lecture Hicks found that the students became increasingly interactive, even interrupting with questions.

"I enjoyed seeing this develop," he said. "It drove home the point for me that in many cultures students are hesitant to ask questions or challenge constructively, but readily take the opportunity when presented."

Another early challenge Hicks encountered was that into his second lecture he realized he was not teaching at an appropriate knowledge level.

"I thought my starting point was appropriate, but I had to rethink it all," he said. "So I went back to my hotel and created many new slides to explain principles that the audience had not been exposed to. Once I could gauge the audience better, I was able engage them more effectively. They were much more comfortable after that and so was I."

Even before Hicks's trip, Bangladesh had ties to UCR. Several Bangladeshi students are being trained today by faculty within the UCR Dept of Botany and Plant Sciences and other departments. Further, the Institute for Integrative Genome Biology has several researchers with ties to Bangladesh, including geneticist Julia Bailey-Serres who works on flood-tolerant rice.

If given another chance, Hicks would readily lead a workshop in Bangladesh.

"My visit there was rewarding, and I learned about a new culture," he said "It took about two weeks of living and teaching there for me to truly understand that education is one of the important keys to increasing quality of life and reducing misunderstanding among people and nations. Such global outreach is yet another example of how UCR is fulfilling its mission as an institution of higher learning."

###

The University of California, Riverside is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world. Reflecting California's diverse culture, UCR's enrollment has exceeded 20,500 students. The campus will open a medical school in 2013 and has reached the heart of the Coachella Valley by way of the UCR Palm Desert Center. The campus has an annual statewide economic impact of more than $1 billion. A broadcast studio with fiber cable to the AT&T Hollywood hub is available for live or taped interviews. UCR also has ISDN for radio interviews. To learn more, call (951) UCR-NEWS.
