'Hotel Transylvania' Reviews, Green Day, No Doubt & More: The ...

Another week, another round of unimpressed critics.

"Hotel Transylvania," "Won't Back Down," "House at the End of the Street" and "Taken 2" were among the offerings that didn't exactly earn stellar reviews. (Lest you think these folks hate everything, "Looper" and "Pitch Perfect" fared much better.) These movies all faltered in different ways, providing a number of lessons for aspiring filmmakers and Hollywood heavyweights alike.

In music, it was a rough week for genre-defining titans. Both Green Day and No Doubt's latest efforts were met with a lukewarm reception, though No Doubt seemed to be on the receiving end of the harsher criticism. Why so serious? Turns out folks found No Doubt's disc to be a bit on the empty side, all production and not much heart. As for Green Day, the band's evolution into a corporate favorite -- Billie Joe Armstrong's public meltdown and stint in rehab notwithstanding -- has alienated fans who remember their punk days. Lupe Fiasco's message-heavy album didn't exactly make much of a positive impression either.

Peep all the reviews below. As always, let us know who you think missed the mark.

  • 'House At The End Of The Street'

<em>The New York Times</em> was not a fan: <blockquote><a href="http://movies.nytimes.com/2012/09/22/movies/the-house-at-the-end-of-the-street-with-jennifer-lawrence.html">Once the action kicks in, ?House at the End of the Street? turns into a choppily edited, poorly timed mess with little continuity, overloaded with aural shocks in a desperate attempt to compensate for its minimal suspense. </a></blockquote>

  • Green Day's '?Uno!'

Andy Gill of <em>The Independent</em> breaks down Billie Joe Armstrong and friends: <blockquote><a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/album-green-day-uno-reprise-8163413.html">This, the first salvo of a 3CD campaign that will see two further albums released by mid-January, finds Green Day's devotion to the most basic of rock formats resulting almost inevitably in some of the dullest music released all year.</a> </blockquote>

  • Lupe Fiasco's New Record

The Guardian dispatched Lupe's album thusly: <blockquote><a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/sep/27/lupe-fiaso-food-liquor-review">Fiasco is not without skills or beliefs, but neither are as refined as his self-regard.</a></blockquote>

  • Tadanobu Asano, Taylor Kitsch

"Battleship" returns for DVD release. The film was not kindly reviewed when it debuted: <blockquote><a href="http://thecrat.com/movie-reviews/battleship-review-by-adam/">You can?t ?get? a film like Battleship. It?s not satire, it doesn?t play on two levels like Starship Troopers, it?s just shit. Still, I almost encourage you to seek it out. As a piece of miscalculated, American wankery, it is almost unparalleled. Consider this one Sunk.</a></blockquote>

  • 'Taken 2'

Writing in <em>Time Out</em>, Tom Huddleston panned Neeson's thriller sequel: <blockquote><a href="http://www.timeout.com/film/reviews/92047/taken-2.html">?Taken 2? is a cynical, contemptuous film whose sole reason for existing appears to be to squeeze the pockets of anyone who enjoyed the first movie. Don?t give it the satisfaction.</a></blockquote>

  • 'Won't Back Down'

This film seems like a really good try: <blockquote><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/movies/wont-back-down,1213163/critic-review.html">The one-step-forward, two-steps-back nature of collaborative reform doesn?t lend itself to a climax featuring plucky heroes wearing green and big bad union guys wearing red. Writer-director Daniel Barnz choreographs that sequence to maximize nail-biting and stirring emotion. But by that time, ?Won?t Back Down? has become so didactic that viewers are likely to feel less uplifted than lectured.</a></blockquote>

  • 'Hotel Transylvania'

The children's movie did not impress Newsday's Rafer Guzman: <a href="http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/movies/hotel-transylvania-review-horror-not-so-funny-1.4043212"><blockquote>"Hotel Transylvania," a 3-D animated feature in which Count Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) manages a resort for persecuted monsters, feels like a string of jokes without a story. That might be better than the other way around, but this Sony Pictures Animation production ends up feeling less like a children's movie and more like a disposable summer comedy.</blockquote></a>

  • No Doubt - 'Push & Shove'

No Doubt seems to have lost their way, according to the <em>Boston Globe</em>: <blockquote><a href="http://articles.boston.com/2012-09-25/arts/34035857_1_push-band-foursome">It?s not a matter of everybody fighting for their own ideas at the group?s expense; just the opposite, in fact, as it sounds like every last detail was worked out through numbing compromise. The band has rarely sounded this faceless, with the indiscriminate, locked-in sheen of a producer-driven act instead of the fused idiosyncrasies of a supposedly inspired foursome.</a></blockquote>

(AP) ? The pope's once-trusted butler went on trial Saturday for allegedly stealing papal documents and passing them off to a journalist in the worst security breach of the Vatican's recent history ? a case that embarrassed the Vatican and may shed further light on the discreet, internal workings of the papal household.

In its first hearing in the case, the three-judge Vatican tribunal threw out some evidence gathered during the investigation of butler Paolo Gabriele, who is charged with aggravated theft. It also decided to separate Gabriele's trial from that of his co-defendant, a computer expert charged with aiding and abetting the crime.

Gabriele is accused of taking the pope's correspondences, photocopying the documents and handing them to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose book "His Holiness: The secret papers of Pope Benedict XVI," was published to great fanfare in May.

Prosecutors have said Gabriele confessed to taking the documents because he wanted to expose the "evil and corruption" in the church. They quoted him as saying during an interrogation that he felt inspired by the Holy Spirit to inform the pope about the church's problems and that a "shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the church back on the right track."

Nuzzi on Saturday wished Gabriele well, tweeting "Good Luck, courageous Paoletto, we're with you." He referred to Gabriele by the diminutive nickname used by the pope and other members of the papal household.

The trial inside the intimate, austere courtroom was the highest-profile case to come before the Vatican judiciary since the 1929 founding of the Vatican city state, the world's smallest sovereign state. Media from around the world converged on St. Peter's Square to cover the case, which has attracted attention not so much because of the content of the documents but because they were stolen from the pope's desk and leaked, allegedly by one of Benedict's closest assistants.

On Saturday, the court said the pope's personal secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, had been called as a witness, testimony that is sure to attract attention given that Gaenswein rarely speaks in public much less about the details of the tight-knit papal family of which Gabriele formed part.

Other witnesses include one of the four consecrated women who take care of the pope's apartment, a monsignor in the Vatican secretary of state, the No. 2 Swiss Guard commander and the head of the Vatican police force.

Judge Giuseppe Dalla Torre set the next hearing for Tuesday, when Gabriele will be questioned. He said he thought the whole trial could be wrapped up in four more hearings.

Gabriele faces up to four years in prison if he is convicted. He has already asked to be pardoned by the pope, something most Vatican watchers say is a given.

Gabriele, 46, appeared calm but tense during the 2 hour, 15 minute hearing, frequently crossing his hands or clasping them in his lap. He wore a light gray suit and tie.

He sat alone on a bench on one side of the courtroom, following the proceedings impassively. During a break in the hearing, he chatted with his attorney, Cristiana Arru, and greeted journalists with a nod and a smile as he entered and exited.

Arru raised a series of objections at the start of the hearing, only some of which were accepted by the court. One concerned two jailhouse conversations Gabriele had with the head of the Vatican police force without his lawyers present. The judges declared both inadmissible. The content isn't public.

Arru also sought access to the report of a commission of cardinals appointed by the pope to investigate the leaks alongside Vatican magistrates. The court denied the request.

The attorney for co-defendant Claudio Sciarpelletti successfully petitioned to have his client's trial separated from that of Gabriele. Sciarpelletti wasn't in the court Saturday and his trial date wasn't set.

Neither Gabriele's wife nor any of his three children attended the hearing. Space for the public was limited; eight of the 18 seats were taken up by the journalists who followed the proceedings and then briefed the rest of the Vatican press corps afterward.

The courtroom itself was spare, with wood paneling along the walls, a gilded crest of the Holy See in the ceiling, a photograph of Benedict over the prosecutor's chair and a crucifix over the chair of the presiding judge. It's located in a four-story palazzo tucked behind St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican gardens.

Security was relaxed, with the guards at the tribunal entrance mostly concerned that none of the press or public brought in any recording devices: They even checked pens to make sure they couldn't record, and sequestered cell phones into safe boxes. No television or still cameras were allowed, except for Vatican media which filmed the first moments at the start of the hearing.

Given the content of the leaks and the Vatican's penchant for secrecy, the fact that the trial was open to the public and media might seem unusual. In fact, such trials in the Vatican's civil and penal tribunal are routinely public. They just don't happen very often or attract much attention. The Vatican's ecclesial courts on the other hand, which handle marriage annulments, clerical sex abuse cases and other matters of church law, remain firmly off-limits to outsiders.

In some ways, the willingness of the Vatican to proceed with the trial at all is an indication of its efforts to show new transparency in its inner workings. Benedict could have pardoned Gabriele as soon as he was arrested or charged, precluding any trial from getting off the ground. Instead he allowed the trial to go ahead, evidence of the "courage" the Vatican is showing to be more transparent, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi has said.

He called such transparency unprecedented for the Vatican and likened it to the Holy See's recent decision to submit its financial institutions to outside scrutiny by the Council of Europe's Moneyval committee.

Something is Brewing at Coffee + Food | The Cultured Seed

GET YOUR BREW ON AT THIS NEW NOLA EATERY

Everybody should believe in something? I believe I?ll have another coffee. Unknown

Shhhhh? It isn?t even official yet, but someone told me that there is something a-brewing in North Larchmont. So of course, we had to head over to check for ourselves. What we found is NOLA?s newest eatery Coffee + Food, an exquisite take on two of mommy?s most prized necessities.

The coffee? well, put it this way?I don?t usually like to drink coffee unless I am back home in Costa Rica because I just can?t get down with the Charbucks. But their custom made house blend was smooth and just strong to off-set the mere 4 hours of sleep I got the night before nursing a sick toddler back to health.

The food? is prepared slowly and lovingly with fresh in-season ingredients, but ready for you to grab in a flash on your way to your afternoon story time. You can pick up one of their picnic-to-go packs (like ?The Actress? which is chock full of fresh cut veggies, fruit and protein to get you back in your superstar bod), the already infamous Kale Salad or a fresh pressed Panini. We sampled the Roast Beef with this amazing garlic, pesto rub and the Grilled Cheese, which had gruyere, sharp cheddar (not the orange die stuff), and blue cheese, topped with fresh figs and pressed between raisin bread. Needless to say, that went over too well with the tyke, I barely got a bite! Finish off lunch with one of the amazing deserts, like the Chocolate?Raspberry?Cupcake with Raspberry Mouse (which as far as Arya is concerned, we didn?t eat!?That?s for Edan and I to know, and her to never find out).

If you find yourself in this neck of the wood, stop by for a taste and tell them we sent you.

Coffee + Food, 5630 Melrose Avenue @ Larchmont (Please take note: there is no stopping on Melrose between 7-9 am and 3-7 pm).

U.S. Grants License for Uranium Laser Enrichment

The license allows for construction of a plant that uses a process that critics fear could pose a serious nuclear-proliferation risk

From Nature magazine

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) this week granted a licence to allow construction of a plant that uses a controversial uranium enrichment process ? one that critics fear could pose a serious nuclear-proliferation risk. The plant, which would be built through a partnership between General Electric (GE) and Hitachi in Wilmington, North Carolina, could be used to enrich uranium to make fuel for nuclear reactors quickly and cheaply using a process that involves a laser.

The laser process has long held the promise of cheaper uranium enrichment, but mastering it efficiently has so far proved elusive. Now, many think that GE Hitachi, which uses a proprietary enrichment technique known as separation of isotopes by laser excitation, or SILEX, may have finally found a way to make the method more efficient than processes involving gaseous diffusion or centrifuges (See Risky Business).

Although the exact details of the SILEX process are highly classified, it involves using a laser tuned to a specific frequency to siphon away the desired isotope uranium-235 from the gaseous form of uranium. This can then be used in nuclear fuels.

Proliferation worry

The concern is that building a fully operational plant could prompt other countries to follow suit, making it easier for them to develop bombs, even though the process is classified. The original application for the GE Hitachi plant in 2009 set off a protracted debate over whether the NRC, headquartered in Rockville, Maryland, sufficiently weighs proliferation risks when licensing new types of enrichment technology (See 'Laser plant offers cheap way to make nuclear fuel'). That prompted the American Physical Society (APS) in College Park, Maryland, to file a formal petition with the NRC asking that such licences be subject to a formal review of proliferation risks.

Calling the new technology a ?game changer?, the APS argued that a laser enrichment plant would, in theory, be smaller than one that uses gas centrifuges, and thus if the technology were to spread, it would be more difficult to spot would-be proliferators. The full petition will be sent to the NRC in November, and the commission will then vote on it ? although it will be too late to affect the GE Hitachi licence.

Yet concerns over proliferation could be seen as premature, because having the licence in hand does not mean that the plant will actually be built. The NRC would have to hold a public meeting in Wilmington before construction could get under way, for instance. And David McIntyre, a spokesman for the NRC, notes that GE Hitachi is not expected to decide until the end of next year whether or not it will proceed with that step.

?We expect a commercialization decision to occur over the next several months,? the company said in a statement. ?This will take into account many factors, including the need for enriched uranium in both the short and long term, cost and efficiency models of the technology on a commercial scale and other considerations.?

There is also still uncertainty about whether GE Hitachi really has the ability to make laser enrichment economical. ?I think anybody who doesn?t have access to GE [Hitachi] proprietary information doesn?t have the answer,? says James Acton, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC.

Acton, a physicist by training, points out that GE Hitachi has so far only built a "test loop" to see whether laser enrichment can be made economical. ?That?s all that?s known publicly, anything beyond that is pure speculation,? he adds.

What Netanyahu's meddling in US election means for Obama, Romney, and diplomacy

Some observers claim that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to tip the scales against President Obama in the elections this November. Judging by his recent behavior ? and based on my own research about how such efforts have played out in other settings ? these accusations are probably correct.

The realization that Mr. Netanyahu may be meddling in the American presidential elections could complicate the foreign policy debate on the campaign trail and have repercussions for future diplomacy between the United States and Israel.

ONE MINUTE DEBATE: 3 views on what the US should do about Iran's nuclear program

At the start of this month, Mr. Netanyahu suddenly began pushing for Washington to lay down new ?red lines? on Iran?s nuclear program. He also warned on Sept. 11 that nations that fail to do so ?don?t have a moral right to place a red light before Israel."

Next, anonymous Israeli sources (and reportedly Netanyahu himself) suggested that Mr. Obama was snubbing Israel?s leader by refusing to meet during the UN General Assembly.

Despite an immediate effort by President Obama to soothe tensions through a late-night phone call to Netanyahu, the prime minister then went on Sunday talk shows to tell the American people that their president was not being tough enough on Iran.

Netanyahu?s dogged efforts to highlight small gaps between the Obama administration?s position and his own have prompted accusations that he seeks to help elect his old friend Mitt Romney. Observers who accuse him of meddling include veteran columnists with the The New York Times, the New Yorker, Time Magazine, and Ha?aretz, as well as Israeli opposition leader Shaul Mofaz.

Meanwhile, other expert commentators believe that Netanyahu?s actions are not aimed at electoral interference. Netanyahu himself felt pressed to reassure observers that ?I?m not going to be drawn into the American election.?

The problem with authoritatively trying to prove or disprove such accusations right now is that practitioners of partisan intervention have strong incentives at the time to deny their true intentions, casting their support for favored politicians in terms of policy issues instead of personal preference.

In my own studies of partisan intervention in the US-Israel relationship, I have found that it can take years before participants feel comfortable admitting their true intentions. Indeed, I was only recently able to get former American officials on record ? and declassified archives confirming ? that President George H. W. Bush pursued a determined, conscious campaign in 1992 to get pro-peace candidate Yitzhak Rabin elected Israel?s prime minister.

Still, the current case is brimming with indicators that one of Netanyahu?s private goals may be to shape the US presidential election. For one, he has a fraught relationship with the incumbent and a longstanding connection with the challenger.

What seems to be a manufactured crisis over Obama refusing to meet him at the UN is especially telling. This sort of ?snub diplomacy? is a classic feature in many past cases of partisan intervention.

For instance, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and Madeleine Albright all floated stories about refusing to meet Netanyahu or his deputies as part of their effort to turn Israeli opinion against the Israeli leader in 1999, hoping to make clear he had lost favor in Washington.

OPINION: Will Netanyahu stay obsessed with Iran or use his new coalition to help Israel?

Another consonant sign of partisan interference is Netanyahu?s renewed interest in reaching out to the American people directly through their televisions. It is especially striking that Netanyahu still chose to take his grievances to the public after President Obama?s telephone call aimed at reconciliation.

Bill Clinton reached out to the Israeli public in much the same way in July of 2000, immediately after the failure of negotiations at Camp David. At Ehud Barak?s request, he used an interview with Israeli TV to help stave off the collapse of Mr. Barak?s pro-peace government in Israel, pledging new concessions for its conduct at the summit and effusively praising Barak?s leadership role.

Netanyahu?s recent sound bites on Iran are already being featured in a million-dollar ad buy attacking Obama in Florida. The group distributing this ad, Secure America Now, is founded by a Republican strategist notorious for having a direct line to the prime minister, so Netanyahu was probably aware of how such remarks would be utilized by American conservatives.

It has also been widely reported that Netanyahu and Mr. Romney share some key benefactors, most notably Republican super-donor Sheldon Adelson. The casino magnate has announced he may spend as much as $100 million this year to bring down Obama. He spent nearly twice that much launching a free, right-leaning newspaper in Israel that many see as a mouthpiece for Netanyahu.

Netanyahu?s confrontational, exasperated tone toward the Obama administration over Iran makes little sense from a diplomatic standpoint. The Israeli prime minister has already received an unprecedented commitment that Obama will never let Iran weaponize its nuclear fuel and will use force if necessary to ensure this promise. Unless Netanyahu is calling into question America?s ability or the president?s word, existing US promises should really be sufficient (if not completely satisfying from an Israeli perspective).

All of these factors suggest that Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to influence the upcoming American presidential election. This is a realization that poses both opportunities and challenges for the presidential campaigns on foreign policy.

Democrats could try to strike back against this controversial behavior by rallying nationalist sentiment against foreign intervention in the US election and accusing Romney of encouraging such meddling. (Netanyahu himself has appealed to his base by accusing Washington of meddling in some past Israeli elections.) However, this could be a risky tactic, since many Jewish American voters tend to view the Israeli premier quite favorably.

Similarly, Republicans could point to Netanyahu?s intentional vote of confidence for their candidate as a sign that Romney is ready for the world stage. However, such a gambit could also backfire by suggesting that Romney?s domestic standing alone is insufficient for getting him across the finish line.

Regardless of who wins in November, the American president is likely to remember Netanyahu?s conduct during this critical period. In the short term, the prime minister may or may not receive additional concessions from Washington on Iran. Unearthing More Value from Outsourcing in the Mining Industry ...

Unearthing More Value from Outsourcing in the Mining Industry

By Sameer Murdeshwar

The global mining industry has been facing major challenges over the past three years, but the factors affecting the industry are moving to a new level of extremity. A study from?Deloitte?revealed that these challenges run from the usual such as:

??? ?Bringing costs down
???? Managing commodity price volatility
??? ?Enhancing corporate social responsibility

to newer ones such as:

??? ?improving capital project management
??? ?attracting financing
??? ?bridging the talent gap with older workers retiring and filling in younger employees
??? ?mitigating the risks of diversification and planning for unforeseeable events in the global economy

These issues are acting as a roadblock for mining companies to improve collaboration and streamline operations globally, comply with international regulations and enhance government and community relations.

In the past, mining companies have outsourced traditional BPO and ITO services to help address some of their challenges. These services include procure to pay and order to cash within finance and accounting, payroll and learning services within human resources, back office contact support, industrial automation, software and embedded development, and general IT support services. These services have helped automate a lot of the processes in the mining value chain. In spite of these investments, the earlier challenges as described in this article persist.

This is where outsourcing of knowledge driven services comes in the picture ? traditional IT/BPO services help consolidate processes and save costs to an extent, but their ability to provide any value beyond the stated objectives remain limited. The industry, led by major player such as Rio Tinto have begun outsourcing key high value services such as sourcing new talent for specific functions, automating bid management, market research specific to the mining supply chain, financial research monitoring global indices tracking prices, master data management through analytics and a centralized expediting system.

Their outsourcing partner for these services is?Infosys BPO. Infosys had a strategy to expand beyond the usual buyer markets of the US and UK and foray into the APAC region. They helped set up these processes for Rio Tinto, and through this partnership, they were able to integrate IT and BPO services as well such as SAP implementation and FAO services. Another strategic relationship from?Rio Tinto, this time, with iGate Patni for data mining and analytics services, has resulted in the opening of an innovation centre, titled Rio Tinto Innovation Center, in Pune, India. This allows further collaboration between resources in both companies, Rio Tinto and iGate-Patni.

Taking a leaf from these outsourcing partnerships, other service providers focusing on KPO services to fuel their new wave of growth, must consider the mining industry as their next big untapped opportunity. The industry offers attractive benefit such as long-term sustainability, scalability across geographies and processes, and an integrated outsourcing framework with KPO as the main service offering, backed by the supporting base of IT and BPO.

Coronaviruses get their name from the crown-like tentacles that surround their rims.

When an unknown virus emerges, disease detectives turn to gene sequencers ? not magnifying glasses ? to identify the culprit.

So when a new type of coronavirus killed a man in Saudia Arabia and hospitalized another in the U.K., investigators got cracking.

Both patients showed symptoms similar SARS. But thanks to fast and accurate gene sequencing, health officials quickly realized that this isn't SARS or even a known coronavirus that causes colds. Rather it's a totally new virus that needs to be handled with caution until more is known about it.

Yesterday scientists at Britain's Health Protection Agency partially decoded the new virus's genetic sequence. They've placed the virus on the family tree of coronaviruses. And even given the virus a temporary name, which I have to warn you is quite a mouthful: London1_novel CoV 2012.

The virus appears to be most closely related to a cluster of bat viruses, and "it is genetically very different than SARS," Ralph Baric, a microbiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, tells Shots.

But the DNA sequence isn't just a tool for hanging the virus on the right branch of the family tree. It has helped health workers rapidly respond to the disease in ways they couldn't when SARS emerged in China in 2002.

? The new coronavirus has been tentatively named London1_novel CoV 2012. A small piece of its genome tells researchers how closely related the virus is to other known coronavirus, such as SARS. Courtesy of Health Protection Agency.

The new coronavirus has been tentatively named London1_novel CoV 2012. A small piece of its genome tells researchers how closely related the virus is to other known coronavirus, such as SARS.

With the new virus's DNA at their fingertips, health workers alerted the WHO about the potentially dangers of the virus just three weeks after the second patient showed symptoms.

With the SARS epidemic, it took over three months ? and hundreds of infected people ? before the WHO was contacted. That epidemic caused over 8,000 infections and killed nearly a thousand people.

This rapid detection of new viruses, Baric says, is due in part to a technology, called deep sequencing. The method allows scientists to differentiate closely related viruses and ones that are rapidly mutating. Deep sequencing decodes genes at a very high level of accuracy so even small changes are visible.

Since the SARS epidemic, virologists have used deep sequencing to discover dozens of new coronavirus in bats, badgers, birds and humans from around the world. They've built a family tree of coranviruses with these sequences showing how the viruses relate to each other.

When a new virus appears on the scene, like the London strain, scientists can quickly sequence it and figure out where it fits in. If it sits on top of a known pathogen, then doctors may have a good idea of how to counter it. If it's completely new, as in this case, health workers can alert the WHO and take extra precautions before it spreads.

The genetic code for the new coronavirus also gives doctors a tool for quickly finding new cases, Baric say. They can even go "back in time and see if the virus caused other strange respiratory illnesses over the past few months," Baric says.

"It is fairly common for doctors to keep samples from fatal respiratory cases," Baric says. Doctors can now sequence the samples and look for the new virus's genes.

Baric thinks these types of tools make deep sequencing "one of the most important advances in public health."

"There's tremendous expertise and capabilities for identifying and tracking new viruses" he says. "This is a huge public health advantage and it's been put in place [since the SARS epidemic] to protect the global health."

The Market Doesn&#39;t Think There&#39;s An iPhone ... - Business Insider

AP

Lines are for sheep. The crazy ones just wait a few weeks.

This morning, Apple announced what, at first glance, looked like a disastrous number for launch-weekend iPhone 5 sales.

The "worst-case" scenario that had been thrown around was 6 million, and estimates had run as high as 10-12 million.

The 5 million number Apple reported looked so bad that, had the consensus been that it was caused by weak demand for the iPhone 5, Apple's stock would have crashed.

But Apple's stock didn't crash.

It just dipped 1%.

So that tells you that the market isn't even remotely worried about demand for the iPhone 5.

Is the market right not to be worried?

Probably.

Although demand for the iPhone 5 in some locations did not seem as intense as it has in the past, most of stores appear to have run out of iPhones pretty quickly. And, as Gene Munster and other analysts noted this morning (when explaining why a number that looked like a disaster might not be a disaster), many of the 2 million iPhones ordered via "pre-orders" will be recognized as sales this week or even in October, which is in the next fiscal quarter, and therefore may not have been included in that 5-million number. (This is because Apple does not count these iPhones as "sold" until they actually reach the end customer.) And then there is probably a trend toward more online ordering instead of store-based purchases as savvy customers try to avoid wasting time in the horrendous lines that accompany every iPhone launch.

And there's another factor that is probably at work here, one that will spread sales of the iPhone 5 out over the next year instead of bunching them into a frenzied week or two:

Carrier contract expirations.

The US and other iPhone markets are now much more mature than they have been in prior iPhone launches, which means fewer of the new iPhone sales will go to "new users" (people who haven't had smartphones) than they have in the past. A larger percentage of buyers, in other words, will be coming off contracts, which may affect the timing of when these buyers can upgrade to the latest phone.

Also, in an attempt to reduce the cost of frequent upgrades (and the subsidies associated with them), the carriers have been getting more stringent about when users can upgrade to new phones. As a result, most people who bought the iPhone 4S last year--and a lot of people bought the iPhone 4S--will likely be stuck with it for a while.

Although tech snoots have been hyperventilating over the iPhone 5, moreover, the truth is that it's a relatively minor upgrade over the 4S, which itself was a relatively minor upgrade over the 4, and so on. Each incremental generation of smartphones does less to improve the overall user experience than the early upgrades did. So even folks who want an iPhone 5 and plan to get one may not feel compelled to deal with the hassles of the launch-week rush, preferring to wait until they know they can just walk into a store and get one.

Lastly, there's the ongoing challenge of supply: Even with millions of Chinese workers assigned to the task, cranking out 5-10 million iPhones in a couple of months is a mind-bogglingly complex production challenge, and Apple may simply be bumping up against the limits of what is currently possible. Although Apple undoubtedly wanted to have a successful iPhone 5 launch, it would probably actually prefer that the sales be spread out over the next 6-12 months, rather than coming in one massive burst. So it may actually not be in Apple's interest to produce much more launch-day supply.

Bottom line, there seem to be a lot of good reasons why the market concluded that there's no iPhone demand problem, despite the ostensibly lousy launch-weekend sales. And the market's probably right.

German business optimism drops 5th month in row

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Business optimism in Germany fell for the fifth month in a row, a closely-watched survey showed Monday, in another sign that Europe's debt crisis is weighing on the continent's largest economy.

The Ifo index dipped to 101.4 in September from 102.3 in August. The consensus in the markets was for a flat reading.

Germany's government is in relatively good financial shape and its economy has performed strongly over the past couple of years despite rising debt problems across the 17-country eurozone.

However, a large chunk of Germany's exports go to its euro partners and the troubles in the single currency zone are worrying businesses and consumers in Germany. Growth is stalling and recession fears are mounting.

Concerns over Europe's debt crisis have eased after the European Central Bank president Mario Draghi announced a plan to buy government bonds of indebted countries, such as Spain and Italy, if they agree to take steps to reduce their deficit.

But growth prospects for the currency union remain weak. Governments are cutting spending, withdrawing stimulus from their economies and sending unemployment higher. Meanwhile businesses in the indebted countries face higher costs for the credit they would need to invest and expand.

"Today's Ifo index shows that German companies remain skeptical about the economic impact of Mario Draghi's magic," ING analyst Carsten Brzeski said.

"Despite fears of a looming eurozone break-up clearly fading away, German businesses are downscaling their expectations. The structural adjustments in Germany's eurozone trading partners will take time and will dampen demand for German products."

Germany's economy grew 0.3 percent in the second quarter from the quarter before, but some economists now see the country heading for a recession in the second half of the year.

The Ifo survey is a leading indicator, meaning it provides clues about where the economy is going in the months ahead.

Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg Bank, said monthly data such as the Ifo could be volatile, and that other indicators such as surveys of purchasing managers supported the view that Germany could still avoid recession.

"The drop in Ifo business confidence is a potent reminder that the outlook for the German and eurozone economies still hangs in the balance," Schmieding said.

In Japan, anti-China protest over islands row

TOKYO ?

Hundreds of Japanese have marched through downtown Tokyo in a loud but tightly controlled protest against China's claim to disputed islands in the East China Sea.

The protest Saturday, organized by the nationalist group "Ganbare Nippon," or "Go for It, Japan," followed scores of sometimes violent anti-Japanese demonstrations in China in recent weeks.

Though hundreds of Japanese protesters gathered in a downtown park and then marched through the glitzy Roppongi district, authorities only allowed small groups of five people each to visit the sidewalk opposite the Chinese Embassy.

"Come on out of there!" some of the protesters screamed at the well-guarded embassy building, which was closed. Dozens of police kept order, moving the groups away from the embassy after only a few minutes.

TORONTO (AP) ? Jon Jones successfully defended his light heavyweight title, surviving an early scare to submit former champion Vitor Belfort in the fourth round at UFC 152 on Saturday night.

Belfort came close with an armbar in the first round, but Jones' reach, varied attack and ground and pound took a toll on the veteran challenger.

Unable to get his striking game going, Belfort tried to take the fight to the ground where he could use his jiu-jitsu. But he paid a price and finally fell victim to an Americana submission 54 seconds into the round. Jones improved to 17-1, and Belfort dropped to 21-10.

In the co-main event at the Air Canada Centre, Demetrious Johnson won a split decision ? 48-47, 47-48, 49-46 ? over Joseph Benavidez to become the UFC's first flyweight champion.

Jones took down Belfort down 30 seconds after the opening bell, and the Brazilian responded with an armbar attempt that looked dangerous. Jones slammed Belfort down to the canvas and eventually wriggled free as the crowd began to chant "Vitor! Vitor!"

"I've never had my arm pop like that before," said Jones, who said he would have let his arm break rather than tap out.

Jones remained on top and began to throw elbows, cutting Belfort. The doctor had a look at the battered challenger between rounds.

Belfort, who does his best work traditionally in the first round, came out punching in the second. But he had a hard time penetrating Jones' reach. The champion began to pick away at Belfort, who pulled guard later in the round to bring the fight back to the ground.

Belfort took some more elbows as he tried to get into position for another submission attempt.

Jones put him down with a kick to the rib in the third. This time, Jones let him get back up only to have Belfort pull guard again.

"Go with your punches if you want to win this fight," Belfort's cornerman yelled between rounds.

He did but pulled guard again and Jones went to work with some elbows before cranking Belfort's arm back and forcing the tapout.

"That's why he's a champion," said Belfort, who said he had hurt his rib in training.

Johnson (16-2-1) beat Benavidez (16-3) in the battle of the little men ? Johnson is 5-foot-3 and Benavidez 5-4. Benavidez looked to press, but the faster Johnson simply wore him down. He had a cut on his left eye in the third round, as well as redness on his legs from Johnson kicks.

Benavidez did get Johnson down in the fourth round, but failed to take advantage. He tried for a choke and ended up having to fight off a leg lock. Johnson opened the fifth with a pair of quick takedowns.

Both fighters raised their hands in victory after the fight, but Johnson did it faster and with more conviction.

"I was a little shocked," Johnson said about the split decision. "I've still got to prove a lot of things."

Featherweight Cub Swanson had one of the night's highlights, an eye-popping KO over highly touted Charles Oliveira thanks to a clubbing right to the temple of the American-based Brazilian.

Oliveira (16-3 with one no contest) stood still for several seconds and then toppled, prompting referee Yves Lavigne to step in at 2:40 of the first round. Oliveira left the cage with the support of a cornerman.

Swanson (18-5) had hurt him with a shot to the liver seconds before.

English middleweight Michael Bisping showed his all-around game in winning unanimously 29-28 over Brian Stann. Bisping improved to 24-4, and Stann fell to 12-5.

The card was UFC's 10th show in Canada and third in Toronto.
