(AP) ? The NHL and the players' association are using the final hours of 2012 to try to get closer to an elusive deal that has so far been well out of reach.

Negotiations were scheduled for Monday afternoon at the league's New York office, marking the first time the NHL and the union will be bargaining in nearly three weeks, and the first time they will do so without mediation since early December.

The New Year's clock is ticking while the window to reach a labor agreement to save the season is rapidly closing. No one has said exactly how much time remains, but the belief is the NHL wants a shortened season to start no later than Jan. 19.

That leaves a little less than two weeks to reach an agreement and stage one week of training camp before the puck would drop on a 48-game campaign.

The league and the union had informational discussions ? by conference call and in meetings ? with staff members that lasted much of Saturday and ended Sunday. Those talks were spurred by the nearly 300-page contract proposal the NHL presented to the union Thursday.

The union is expected to make a counteroffer Monday. These will be the first negotiations since the sides met with a federal mediator Dec. 13.

All games through Jan. 14 have been canceled, claiming more than 50 percent of the original schedule. The NHL wants to reach a deal by Jan. 11 and open the season eight days later.

Bargaining sessions with only the NHL and union haven't been held since Dec. 6, when talks abruptly ended after the players' association made a counterproposal. The league said that offer was contingent on the union accepting three elements unconditionally and without further bargaining.

The NHL then pulled all existing offers off the table. Two days of sessions with mediators the following week ended without progress.

A person familiar with key points of the offer told The Associated Press that the league proposed raising the limit of individual free-agent contracts to six years from five ? seven years if a team re-signs its own player; raising the salary variance from one year to another to 10 percent, up from 5 percent; and one compliance buyout for the 2013-14 season that wouldn't count toward a team's salary cap but would be included in the overall players' share of income.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the new offer weren't being discussed publicly.

The NHL maintained the deferred payment amount of $300 million it offered in its previous proposal, an increase from an earlier offer of $211 million. The initial $300 million offer was pulled after negotiations broke off this month.

The latest proposal is for 10 years, running through the 2021-22 season, with both sides having the right to opt out after eight years.

If this offer doesn't quickly lead to a new collective bargaining agreement, the next round of cuts could claim the entire schedule.

The NHL is the only North American professional sports league to cancel a season because of a labor dispute, losing the 2004-05 campaign to a lockout. A 48-game season was played in 1995 after a lockout stretched into January.

It is still possible this dispute could eventually be settled in the courts if the sides can't reach a deal on their own.

The NHL filed a class-action suit this month in U.S. District Court in New York in an effort to show its lockout is legal. In a separate move, the league filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board, contending bad-faith bargaining by the union.

Those moves were made because the players' association took steps toward potentially filing a "disclaimer of interest," which would dissolve the union and make it a trade association. That would allow players to file antitrust lawsuits against the NHL.

Union members voted overwhelmingly to give their board the power to file the disclaimer by Wednesday. If that deadline passes, another authorization vote could be held to approve a later filing.

Auto Insurance For Teenage Drivers: How to Minimize It

Oklahoma City InsuranceTeenagers are excited about getting their independence when they pass their road tests. As a parent, however you may be stressed about including your kids on your auto insurance policy. Oklahoma City Insurance companies usually view teenagers as high risk drivers due to their lack of experience and perceived incompetence behind the wheel. Teenagers are often adventurous on the road; they may want to try stunts they have seen in movies or on television. Insurance companies know this, that is why your premiums will increase when your teenager starts driving. Fortunately, there are several factors you can control to minimize the raise in premiums when you add teens to your insurance policy.

Type of Vehicle

Teenagers often like customized, fast and sporty vehicles. These teens enjoy speeding which is exactly what makes them high risk drivers. Insurance companies on the other hand, hate seeing teenagers in fast vehicles. The faster the vehicle, the higher the chances of an accident. Think twice before buying a sports car or other turbo-charged vehicle since your insurance premiums will shoot up. In addition to worrying about premiums, you should ensure that your child drives a car which is even safer than yours because teens are more likely to get into accidents due to their lack of experience and willingness to take risks.

Driving History

Insurance companies favor drivers with clean driving records. If your teenager causes any type of accident, your insurance premiums will rise. Your premiums will also go up if your child gets speeding tickets because breaking driving laws can increase the risk of accident. Teens who have few to no driving related incidents on their records will be seen as a lower risk, so you'll pay less if your kids keep their driving records clean.

Enrollment in a Teen Driving School

All teenagers should take driver's education in order to lower their risk level. Insurance companies will offer lower premiums to kids who are in these types of programs. The grades your kids get in these classes can also significantly impact the premiums. Insurance companies often award a 25% premium discount to teenagers who score a mean grade of ?B? or more in driver's education courses.

Driving Frequency

Your premiums will be higher if your teen drives more frequently because every time an adolescent gets behind the wheel, it's considered a higher risk than if an adult was driving. Thus, ?if your child is listed as an occasional driver, your premiums will be low compared to if he or she is listed as a permanent driver. If possible, limit your child's use of the car to occasional drives in order to keep premiums low. If you want your child to be able to drive frequently, take extra safety precautions to minimize the risk to your teen and to your vehicle. You might also want to consider getting separate insurance for your teen driver to save money on your premiums.

There are lots of factors to consider when adding teenagers to auto policies. If you are thinking about getting a vehicle for your teenage driver or adding your child to your policy, call an agent at Strunk Insurance today at 800-375-8356 for a free quote.

Create a Successful Wellness Plan

When a New Year takes hold, it is always beneficial to reflect upon where you have been as well as look ahead to where you want to go. I was raised to always have a strategy for my life whether it be in the form of a one-year, five-year or ten-year plan. So as not to flounder, it?s always useful to have a plan, especially when it comes to your wellness.

In business, planning often occurs annually with quarterly check-in?s to make sure all is on track. Typical plans include consideration of budgets, manpower, time, priorities, etc. Have you ever thought about your personal annual budget, the amount of time you really want to work versus spend with family and friends, your true priorities in life, a food budget for your nutritional goals, an exercise budget for your fitness goals, etc.?

What would happen if you practiced the same technique for your personal life? What if you planned out your year in advance and once a quarter checked in with yourself to make sure you?re still headed where you want? Could this simple act help reduce stress because you?re practicing proactive versus reactive behavior? Could it set you up for success and better health because you?re following a path you've chosen versus taking one you thought was expected?

The quality of your wellness today is in direct correlation to the choices you made in the past. The choices you make today and onward will determine your future wellness. When you choose to plan and then make the conscious choice to act on your plan, you will manifest your intentions and live in wellness now.

Five Steps to a Successful Wellness Plan:

1. Vision: What is your vision for your wellness? Take some time to list what you most desire to achieve and/or experience with your wellness. Try dividing this list into sections: Overall lifestyle, Medical, Nutritional, Fitness, and Spiritual.

2. Intentions: Pulling from your Vision List, specify intentions for your personal wellness that you will accomplish over the next 12 months.

3. Values: Prioritize the values you will be honoring by bringing your intentions to fruition.

4. SMART Plan: What goals and objectives (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely) must be achieved in order to fulfill your intentions without compromising your values?

5. Actions/Tasks: Create a prioritized list of action-oriented tasks to complete your intentions for the year. Break them down into daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly segments. Check in regularly to ensure you?re on your chosen path. If not, adjust and continue. If so, congratulate yourself and keep moving forward!!

Travel Insurance to the Rescue During Powerful Winter Storms, says ...

Powerful winter storms have suspended thousands of flights across the country, wreaking havoc on post-holiday travel plans. Those who purchased travel insurance and planned ahead are reaping the benefits, while others are left with limited options for reaching their final destinations. Squaremouth, America?s fastest growing travel insurance agency, is reminding travelers stranded by a backlog of cancellations and delays to lean on travel insurance for relief.

?Travelers who have planned for the worse are benefiting from insurance coverage, while other travelers are at the mercy of the airlines,? says Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth. ?This week is a prime example of just how beneficial travel insurance can be.?

From three-hour delays to cancelling a trip altogether, travelers can take advantage of the following benefits to keep holiday travel frustration at a minimum.

Travel Delay
Travel delay typically covers minor expenses, but is among the most frequently used benefits during times of high travel and mass delays. The benefit can pay for meals, accommodations and local transportation.

Some policies may even provide coverage for a traveler involved in a weather related traffic accident while on their way to the airport. It?s important however, to know the details of a policy to ensure this specific type of coverage is included.

Travelers should also be aware of the time restrictions and limitations related to the benefit. Most providers require travelers to be delayed for a specific amount of time before the benefit kicks in. Travel delay benefits can become available in as little as three hours.

Trip Interruption
Trip interruption can reimburse travelers up to 200% of the trip cost if a reason listed on the policy prevents them from continuing on their trip. For example, a traveler who makes it through the first leg of their trip but is unable to continue on due to the weather can return home early. The benefit can provide reimbursement for the unused days of a trip and the charges incurred for additional transportation expenses to either get home or rejoin the trip.

Trip Cancellation
When all else fails and a trip must be cancelled, those who have trip cancellation coverage can rest easy knowing they can be reimbursed for costly nonrefundable expenses. Trip cancellation protection provides up to 100% in reimbursement if a traveler needs to cancel a trip. Travelers who have weather coverage under this benefit, and are stranded by this week?s mass travel disruptions, are in the most favorable position in terms of travel and recouping their costs.

?Trip cancellation is one of the most popular reasons people buy travel insurance this time of year,? says Harvey. ?With so many cancellations this week, travelers who have purchased this benefit have the comfort of knowing they won?t go home at a complete loss.?

As scores of stranded airport travelers try to make it to their final destinations through a series of powerful storms, those with travel insurance are far better off. Whether it?s waiting out a rebooked flight, booking an overnight hotel or incurring costs for canceling a trip, travel insurance is often the best way to minimize the negative impacts being felt at airports across the country.

Iran's president dismisses health minister

(AP) ? Iranian state TV is reporting the country's president has dismissed the health minister after her ministry put out a statement criticizing authorities for not providing money to import medicine.

The Thursday report says Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has replaced Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi, the sole female member of the Cabinet, by a temporary caretaker.

Last week her ministry in a statement said the Central Bank had not allocated a budget to import medicine, but provided hard currency for importing pet food, horse saddles and dog collars.

The country faces a hard currency shortage linked to the West's oil and banking sanctions on Iran. This has in turn fueled the political struggle between Ahmadinejad and his critics, in particular hardliners aligned with the clerical establishment.

Parliamentarians have also accused Ahmadinejad of underfunding medicine.

Senate approves $60.4 billion Superstorm Sandy reconstruction bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate on Friday approved a $60.4 billion aid package to pay for reconstruction costs from Superstorm Sandy, after defeating Republican efforts to trim the bill's cost.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urged the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to quickly take up the bill.

Both chambers have to agreed on a package by Jan 2, when the current term of Congress is expected to end, or restart the process of crafting legislation in 2013.

The bill's chances in the next few days could depend on whether President Barack Obama and congressional leaders reach a deal to avert the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts set to begin kicking in the new year.

Republicans complain the $60.4 billion reconstruction package requested by Obama is more than the annual budgets for the departments of Interior, Labor, Treasury and Transportation combined. They have urged a slower relief approach based on a congressional assessment of needs.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated about $8.97 billion of the Senate bill would be spent in 2013, with another $12.66 billion spent in 2014 and $11.59 billion spent in 2015

Police detain 15 protesting at Russian bill to ban U.S. adoption

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Police detained 15 Russians protesting against a bill to ban U.S. adoptions of Russian orphans in retaliation for a U.S. law that punishes Russian human rights violators, activists said on Wednesday.

Despite criticism of the measure by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, pro-Kremlin lawmakers will hold a preliminary vote on the proposal and on another that would bar Russian non-profit groups from receiving funds from the United States.

Opposition activists said the protesters were detained outside Russia's lower house of parliament, the State Duma.

Another two dozen protesters stood in the freezing cold heckling deputies as they entered the building. One activist held up before-and-after pictures of a Russian child looking bruised, then happy with his new American parents.

"They (the deputies) are committing an awful act against our people," said Lev Kukhovyesky, 28, a historian who was among the protesters. "We would like to show that we are not indifferent."

The initiatives, which have upset civil rights groups, were added to a bill, approved in the first of three readings on Friday, which would bar entry to Americans who violate the rights of Russians abroad and freeze their assets.

Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed the original bill as an "adequate" response to the U.S. law, which he said had hurt ties with Moscow by ordering visas be denied to Russian human rights violators.

But Putin has signaled he wants to limit the damage to a "reset" in relations with President Barack Obama's administration. The Kremlin said the U.S. leader would visit Russia in the first half of next year.

Putin said the response to the so-called Magnitsky Act should not be "excessive" - a position echoed by his spokesman ahead of the vote on amendments to the bill.

"The tough, emotional reaction of Russian lawmakers is understandable. Of course, the position of the executive branch is more restrained," Dmitry Peskov told the state Itar-Tass agency.

The bill is likely to be put to a third and final vote on Friday. The upper house of parliament and Putin are expected to approve the bill, making it law by the end of the year.

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Lavrov said a ban on U.S. adoptions would be wrong and Education Minister Dmitry Livanov criticized the idea on his Twitter microblog.

Any ban on U.S. adoptions would go back on new rules agreed in July.

The U.S. Magnitsky Act was drawn up because of concern over the death in a Russian prison of anti-corruption lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in 2009. It has outraged Russian politicians and members of parliament.

In turn, the Duma's bill is named in honor of Dima Yakovlev - a Russian 2-year-old who died when his American adoptive father forgot that he had left him in a closed car in sweltering heat in 2008.

The man was acquitted in the United States, sparking public outraged in Russia and the stricter adoption rules.

'WWE '13': 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin speaks, part one

"WWE '13": "Stone Cold" Steve Austin raises hellThe Rock vs. Big Show: Raw, March 13, 2000 (Full-Length Match)Bret Hart and British Bulldog vs. Jim Neidhart and Owen Hart: Raw, November 7, 1994 (Full-Length Match)Rey Mysterio vs. Tyson Kidd: Superstars, March 25, 2010 (Full-Length Match)The Undertaker vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin - WWE Championship Match: Raw, June 28, 1999 (Full-Length Match)Six-Way Top Contendership Cruiserweight Match: SuperBrawl Revenge (Full-Length Match)CM Punk vs. John Morrison: SmackDown, August 14, 2009 (Full-Length Match)

The reviews are in, and THQ?s revolutionary ?WWE ?13? is a bona fide smash-hit among fans and critics, thanks in large part to its incredible Attitude Era campaign mode. With that in mind, WWE.com decided to catch up with the catalyst of that time period, WWE Hall of Famer ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin.

In this candid two-part interview, Austin talks to Extreme Announcer Joey Styles about the heyday of The Attitude Era, his wars with Mr. McMahon and even his thoughts on current Superstars like John Cena. As always, ?Stone Cold? is honest and open, and nothing is off limits.

WWE.COM: You will be forever associated with The Attitude Era. What was it about you and your personality that made you the guy for that time period?

?STONE COLD??STEVE AUSTIN: That?s a damn good question; I don?t know if I?ve got the answer for it. I guess I was just an entertaining guy. It?s hard for me to answer that question, because it?s cool to be that guy. But I?m not gonna sit here and blow smoke up my a**. I guess I just turned it up to be loud and aggressive, and I meant what I said and I did what I said.

I think the character of ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin, he was a pretty honest and straight-shooting cat, and he was digging and scratching and clawing to get to the top in the business that he loved and it showed in the work and in the persona I created.

That?s the best that I can figure. I was the guy who did it.

WWE.COM: Well, without ?blowing smoke,? we can say that it was magical to watch. And sure, you were all business, but it looked like you were having a lot of fun in your war against Mr. McMahon. Is that fair to say?

AUSTIN: Oh yeah, man, that was a great time. I had a good time every time I went to work, and that was back in the day when we were on the road [even more than Superstars today]. It was just a blast to go to work every single night, and not just on Monday Night Raw or on a pay-per-view, and it was a blast going to WWE Live Events, because that was all that you did, that?s what you focused on.

You?d get out on the road, be gone for three weeks and be dying to get home, but as soon as you got home, you?re bored and itching to get back on the road. So it was just a great time in the business. The window that I happened to slide in at ? I?m very appreciative that I came along when I did.

WWE.COM: Is there a Superstar you didn?t get to work with during that time that you would have liked to work with?

AUSTIN: It?s always fun to think about what it would have been like if me and Goldberg had gotten into the ring, to see what would have happened if me and Hollywood Hogan got involved in serious matches, and not in a one-off match. It would have been fun to have worked with a guy like Ultimate Warrior, it would have been fun to do a bunch of matches with Randy Savage, or [Ric] Flair ? I would have liked to work a high-profile series with him.

Hell, just because Bruno Sammartino just threw me under the bus a couple of months ago, it would?ve been to fun to work with him. You talk about the entertainment aspect, that?s what wrestling?s all about.

Now that he's away from the pool, Michael Phelps can reflect ? really reflect ? on what he accomplished.

Pretty amazing stuff.

"It's kind of nuts to think about everything I've gone through," Phelps said. "I've finally had time to myself, to sit back and say, '... that really happened?' It's kind of shocking at times."

Not that his career needed a capper, but Phelps added one more honor to his staggering list of accomplishments Thursday ? The Associated Press male athlete of the year.

Phelps edged out LeBron James to win the award for the second time, not only a fitting payoff for another brilliant Olympics (four gold medals and two silvers in swimming at the London Games) but recognition for one of the greatest careers in any sport.

Phelps finished with 40 votes in balloting by U.S. editors and broadcasters, while James was next with 37. Track star Usain Bolt, who won three gold medals in London, was third with 23.

Carl Lewis is the only other Olympic-related star to be named AP male athlete of the year more than once, taking the award for his track and field exploits in 1983 and '84. The only men honored more than twice are golf's Tiger Woods and cyclist Lance Armstrong (four times each), and basketball's Michael Jordan (three times).

"Obviously, it's a big accomplishment," Phelps said. "There's so many amazing male athletes all over the world and all over our country. To be able to win this is something that just sort of tops off my career."

Phelps retired at age 27 as soon as he finished his final race in London, having won more gold medals (18) and overall medals (22) than any other Olympian.

No one else is even close.

"That's what I wanted to do," Phelps said. "Now that it's over, it's something I can look back on and say, 'That was a pretty amazing ride.'"

The current ride isn't so bad either.

Set for life financially, he has turned his fierce competitive drive to golf, working on his links game with renowned coach Hank Haney as part of a television series on the Golf Channel. In fact, after being informed of winning the AP award, Phelps called in from the famed El Dorado Golf & Beach Club in Los Cabos, Mexico, where he was heading out with Haney to play a few more holes before nightfall.

"I can't really complain," Phelps quipped over the phone.

Certainly, he has no complaints about his swimming career, which helped turn a sport that most Americans only paid attention to every four years into more of a mainstream pursuit.

More kids took up swimming. More advertisers jumped on board. More viewers tuned in to watch.

While swimming is unlikely to ever match the appeal of football or baseball, it has carved out a nice little niche for itself amid all the other athletic options in the United States ? largely due to Phelps' amazing accomplishments and aw-shucks appeal.

Just the fact that he won over James shows just how much pull Phelps still has. James had an amazing year by any measure: The league MVP won his first NBA title with the Miami Heat, picking up finals MVP honors along the way, and then starred on the gold medal-winning U.S. basketball team in London.

Phelps already had won the AP award in 2008 after his eight gold medals in Beijing, which broke Mark Spitz's record. Phelps got it again with a performance that didn't quite match up to the Great Haul of China, but was amazing in its own right.

After the embarrassment of being photographed taking a hit from a marijuana pipe and questioning whether he still had the desire to go on, Phelps returned with a vengeance as the London Games approached. Never mind that he was already the winningest Olympian ever. Never mind that he could've eclipsed the record for overall medals just by swimming on the relays.

He wanted to be one of those rare athletes who went out on top.

"That's just who he is," said Bob Bowman, his longtime coach. "He just couldn't live with himself if knew he didn't go out there and give it good shot and really know he's competitive. He doesn't know anything else but to give that kind of effort and have those kind of expectations."

Phelps got off to a rocky start in London, finishing fourth in the 400-meter individual medley, blown out of the water by his friend and rival, Ryan Lochte. It was only the second time that Phelps had not at least finished in the top three of an Olympic race, the first coming way back in 2000 when he was fifth in his only event of the Sydney Games as a 15-year-old.

To everyone looking in, Lochte seemed poised to become the new Phelps ? while the real Phelps appeared all washed up.

But he wasn't going out like that.

No way.

Phelps rebounded to become the biggest star at the pool, edging Lochte in the 200 IM, contributing to a pair of relay victories, and winning his final individual race, the 100 butterfly. There were two silvers, as well, leaving Phelps with a staggering resume that will be awfully difficult for anyone to eclipse.

His 18 golds are twice as many as anyone else in Olympic history. His 22 medals are four clear of Larisa Latynina, a Soviet-era gymnast, and seven more than the next athlete on the list. Heck, if Phelps was a nation, he'd be 58th in the medal standings, just one behind India (population: 1.2 billion).

"When I'm flying all over the place, I write a lot in my journal," Phelps said. "I kind of relive all the memories, all the moments I had throughout my career. That's pretty special. I've never done that before. It's amazing when you see it all on paper."

Four months into retirement, Phelps has no desire to get back in the pool. Oh, he'll swim every now and then for relaxation, using the water to unwind rather than putting in one of his famously grueling practices. Golf is his passion at the moment, but he's also found time to cheer on his hometown NFL team, the Baltimore Ravens, and start looking around for a racehorse that he and Bowman can buy together.

Phelps hasn't turned his back on swimming, either. He's got his name attached to a line of schools that he wants to take worldwide. He's also devoting more time to his foundation, which is dedicated to teaching kids to swim and funding programs that will grow the sport even more.

He's already done so much.

"His contribution to the way the world thinks about swimming is so powerful," Bowman said. "I don't think any other athlete has transformed his sport the way he's transformed swimming."

Phelps still receives regular texts from old friends and teammates, asking when he's going to give up on this retirement thing and come back the pool as a competitor.

He scoffs at the notion, sounding more sure of himself now than he did in London.

And if there's anything we've learned: Don't doubt Michael Phelps when he sets his mind on something.

"Sure, I could come back in another four years. But why?" he asked, not waiting for an answer. "I've done everything I wanted to do. There's no point in coming back."

Apple sells 2M iPhone 5s in China in first 3 days

Published: Dec 17, 2012 at 9:23 AM PST
NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple said Monday that it sold more than 2 million iPhone 5s in China in their first three days of availability, setting a record for that market.

IPhone 5, which launched in China on Friday, will be available in more than 100 countries by the end of December.

The phone first went on sale on Sept. 21 in the U.S., Germany, France, Japan and five other countries, with more than 5 million of the phones sold in the first three days.

That sales tally also set a record, but only beat last year's iPhone 4S launch by a small margin, falling short of some analysts' expectations. Apple shares hit an all-time high of $705.07 that day, but in the months since the stock has plunged about 28 percent.

Also on Sunday, Citi analyst Glen Yeung cut his rating for the Cupertino, Calif.-based company to "Neutral" from "Buy," questioning the strength of iPhone 5 demand and saying that it's unlikely Apple shares will rally any time soon.

Apple Inc. shares fell $6.85 to $502.94 in premarket trading Monday.

Rumored Facebook site by Iran's leader has US watching

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The U.S. State Department says it will keep tabs on a Facebook page purportedly created by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that includes both positive and derogatory remarks from followers.

Iranian officials had no immediate comment, but the page's contents and style ? including an informal photo of Khamenei riding in a car ? raise serious questions about its authenticity.

Iranian web monitors block access to Facebook and other Western social media sites, and it's highly unlikely Khamenei would endorse a banned outlet.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Monday that U.S. officials will look into the site, joking that Washington is curious how many "likes" Khamenei receives.

The Net is not unknown territory for Iranian leaders, however.

Khamenei, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and others have official websites.

Man suspected in molestation cases arrested in Mexico

SACRAMENTO, Calif. ?

A former Northern California man wanted for several years for allegedly molesting his daughter and his stepdaughter is in custody after being arrested in Mexico and returned to the United States.

Sacramento County sheriff's officials said in 2006 authorities were investigating allegations that Joseph Chavez had molested the girls -- ages nine and ten years old -- but that Chavez disappeared.

Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jason Ramos says an arrest warrant was issued for Chavez in April 2008 when it was determined that he had fled the U.S., but detectives didn't know where Chavez was until getting a tip in March of 2011 that he was living somewhere outside of Mexico City.

Last Thursday, the 33-year-old Chavez was arrested in Cancun, Mexico, then returned to Sacramento County on Friday, where he's being held on suspicion of committing lewd acts with a child under the age of 14.

Stop Snoring By Using These Helpful Tips - Health Care

Snoring can be rather annoying, and it affects million of people all over the world. Although for some people snoring is simply an annoyance, it may be a signal that there are serious health problems that should be addressed. If you have a snoring problem, the tips in this article will help you to treat the condition.

You might have sleep apnea, if you are a heavy snorer. If you notice that you are always tired, wake up abruptly while gasping for air, or stop breathing in your sleep, see a doctor immediately. Sleep apnea disrupts your quality of life and makes it more likely that you will develop vascular disease.

Try to sleep on your side if you want to stop snoring. Your chances of snoring goes way up when you sleep on your back. On the other hand, many people find that sleeping on their stomach is very uncomfortable. When you sleep on your side, your airways will have less obstruction. This will minimize snoring.

Sleeping pills and alcohol cause snoring, so try not to use either of these substances. The muscle relaxation that results from these substances affects your throat, which increases both the frequency and volume of your snoring. You should talk to a doctor about any trouble you have sleeping.

Pregnant women must make a doctor?s appointment, immediately, if they start snoring. Although many expectant mothers do snore during pregnancy because of the extra pressure on their bodies, it is important to make sure that your baby still has enough oxygen while you are snoring. See your doctor as soon as you can to rule out this life-threatening problem.

Nasal Dilators

Internal nasal dilators may help you to stop snoring. Some people snore through the noses, and nasal dilators can help in this case. Nasal dilators are made to fit into your nasal passages and keep them open. This can stop snoring for those people that suffer with this condition.

If you want to stop snoring, you must first determine the cause. If you have a condition that causes snoring, you must get it resolved if you want to stop. Ignoring a bigger medical issue could even make matters worse, in terms of both snoring and general health.

Tennis Ball

The tennis ball method is a remedy that many people claim is quite effective. To do this, attach a tennis ball to your back by either sewing a back pocket or simply placing a tennis ball into a sock and attaching onto your back. If you roll over on your back during your sleep the tennis ball will make it very uncomfortable. When you start side sleeping, then you may remove the ball.

If you suffer from chronic snoring, try a little honey for some fast relief. Honey can clear your airways, which can reduce snoring. Sweeten tea with honey, or put some honey on a piece of toast. Your ?honey? will be grateful!

If a person carries excess weight, they tend to have fat around the neck, which can make them more likely to snore. The snoring is worse due to the extra fat around their windpipes. Take weight loss into consideration if your weight might be a cause. You will sleep well and feel better from the loss.

What you consume could affect how much you snore. Alcohol and sedatives can cause you to snore more when taken regularly. It is best to consume them in moderation. Both of these substances will slow your central nervous system, making your body too relaxed. This will hinder the ability of the muscles in your throat from functioning properly.

As this article stated, while snoring could simply be an annoying problem, it may also be an indication of a more serious condition. If you are worried about your snoring, it?s a good idea to consult with your doctor. The tips that were in this article will help you to get your snoring under control, and finally get some sleep.

Conn. school shooting suspect was son of teacher

WASHINGTON (AP) ? He was an honors student who lived in a prosperous neighborhood with his mother, a grade-school teacher who liked to host dice games and decorate the house for the holidays.

Now Adam Lanza is suspected of killing his mother and then gunning down more than two dozen people, 20 of them children, at the Connecticut school where she taught before taking his own life.

The 20-year-old may have suffered from a personality disorder, law enforcement officials said.

Investigators were trying to learn as much as possible about Lanza and questioned his older brother, who is not believed to have any involvement in the rampage.

Lanza killed his mother at their home before driving her car to Sandy Hook Elementary School and ? armed with at least two handguns ? carried out the massacre, officials said.

A third weapon, a .223-caliber rifle, was found in the car, and more guns were found inside the school.

So far, authorities have not spoken publicly of any possible motive. Witnesses said the shooter didn't utter a word.

Catherine Urso, who was attending a vigil Friday evening in Newtown, Conn., said her college-age son knew the killer and remembered him for his alternative style.

"He just said he was very thin, very remote and was one of the goths," she said.

Lanza and his mother, Nancy, lived in a well-to-do part of Newtown, a prosperous community of 27,000 people about 60 miles northeast of New York City.

A grandmother of the suspect ? who is also the mother of the slain teacher ? was too distraught to speak when reached by phone at her home in Brooksville, Fla.

"I just don't know, and I can't make a comment right now," Dorothy Hanson, 78, said in a shaky voice as she started to cry. She said she hadn't heard anything official about her daughter and grandsons. She declined to comment further and hung up.

Adam Lanza's older brother, 24-year-old Ryan Lanza of Hoboken, N.J., was being questioned, a law enforcement official said. He told authorities that his brother was believed to suffer from a personality disorder, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record about the unfolding investigation.

The official did not elaborate, and it was unclear exactly what type of disorder he might have had.

Ryan Lanza had been extremely cooperative and was not under arrest or in custody, but investigators were still searching his computers and phone records. Ryan Lanza told law enforcement he had not been in touch with his brother since about 2010.

Brett Wilshe, a friend of Ryan Lanza's, said he sent him a Facebook message Friday asking what was going on and if he was OK. According to Wilshe, Lanza's reply was something along the lines of: "It was my brother. I think my mother is dead. Oh my God."

Adam Lanza attended Newtown High School, and several local news clippings from recent years mention his name among the school's honor roll students.

A neighbor in Newtown, Rhonda Cullens, said she knew Nancy Lanza from monthly get-togethers the neighborhood women had a few years back for games of bunco, a dice game.

"She was a very nice lady," Cullens said. "She was just like all the rest of us in the neighborhood, just a regular person."

Cullens recalled that Lanza liked to garden and to make her house look nice for the holidays. Lanza joked, though, that no one noticed because the house was out of view, up a hill, she said.

Sandeep Kapur, who lives two doors down from the Lanza family in Newtown, said he did not know them and was unaware of any disturbances at the Lanza house in the three years that he and his family have been in the neighborhood.

He described the area as a subdivision of well-tended, 15-year-old homes on lots of an acre or more, where many people work at companies like General Electric, Pepsi and IBM. Some are doctors, and his next-door neighbor is a bank CEO, said Kapur, a project manager at an information technology firm.

"The neighborhood's great. We have young kids, and they have lots of friends," he said. "If you drive past this neighborhood, it gives you a really warm feeling."

Finding The Right Injury Lawyer | Reference and Education

Whether you have recently been hurt in a car or truck accident, burned or injured by chemical exposure, hurt on a construction site, or simply frustrated by an insurance company that has refused to pay benefits that are owed to you, a personal injury lawyer can help! The aim of this article is to help you understand how to select the best one.

The personal injury lawyer you choose should be more than just ?competent.? Your legal team should be ?remarkable?. Your personal injury lawyer should provide you with resources to deal with all aspects of your case, answer questions, prepare intensely for trial, try your case (if need be) and always be prepared to fight on your behalf.

A truly remarkable firm will work hard to exceed your expectations. They will pull out all stops to get you compensation to cover damages you have suffered, which may include but are not limited to, medical and surgical costs, lost work time and wages, anxiety, pain and suffering, car mileage and many out of pocket costs that you may face. A respected firm will follow up with clients promptly. Look for a lawyer who has a reputation for being tough but fair, smart and compassionate. A great law firm will make sure the client feels comfortable, and at the same time, they need to send a message, loud and clear, to insurance companies and liable parties that they mean business. The right firm will not be scared to throw their credentials around for the benefit of the client.

Accident and injury victims often find themselves in a state of a shock after a traumatic event and do not act swiftly enough. When a terrible event disrupts everything in your world, it?s only human nature to ?wait a bit? to get your head together before moving forward, but this approach may not be the best idea. Here?s why: Evidence from the accident or injury may get lost or even be deliberately destroyed in the hours and days after the accident. Witness recollections may grow foggier and more inaccurate as time passes after the incident. Even your own recollection of the event will give way to hazier, less accurate memories. And if you wait too long after the accident or injury, you may lose your ability to make a claim altogether, even if you have compelling evidence on your side, due to the ?statute of limitations?.

Each personal injury case is unique and needs to be looked at by an experienced injury lawyer. Choose a car accident lawyer that will give you the time and attention you deserve and need to win your case. Be sure they listen astutely to what you want and need and help you feel calm, comfortable, and taken care of throughout your case. Most injury law firms takes cases on a contingency basis. This means that until they win a trial verdict or reach a settlement, you do not owe anything.

LONDON (Reuters) - European regulators on Friday recommended against approval of Sanofi and Isis Pharmaceutical's drug Kynamro for treatment of a rare genetic disorder that causes unusually high cholesterol.

The European Medicines Agency said it was concerned about the medicine's safety, noting that a high proportion of patients stopped taking it within two years, mainly due to side effects such as flu-like symptoms, injection site reactions and liver toxicity.

The European rebuff contrasts with a green light for the drug, known generically as mipomersen, by a U.S. advisory panel in October.

Sanofi's Genzyme unit said it was disappointed by the decision and planned to request a re-examination.

Let's talk about sex baby?.. or not?. | Corin the Librarian

Back in June 2011 I did a blog post on sexuality and the way society labels us within it. ?That the need to be termed heterosexual, homosexual or bi-sexual was really unneeded and that we should just accept that we are ?sexual? and lie somewhere on a continuum of attraction that can change over our lives. ?Well I guess this is the follow up post :-)

The other night we watched a documentary on NetFlix called (A)Sexual which explored the concept of a-sexuality and the fight for those who identify with this term to be accepted and recognised. ? It was a great documentary and fascinating. ?The main guy in the film, David Jay I found quite annoying and I did not warm to at all. ?But the content that was explored was very interesting.

It started me thinking again about the whole issue of sexuality and what we expect and how we treat it. ?Really, it?s at once the most amazing thing to be able to a sexual being and a blessed curse. ?A major part of our identity is dictated and prescribed to us by media, marketing and advertising from a very early age. ?The ?beautiful? are celebrated and reminded of their riches of looks. ?The average are shown ways that they can aspire to be beautiful people too. ?All this happens in the guise of being accepted, desired. ?The sexual being.

Now don?t get me wrong, I am not preaching from the pulpit here on this topic. ?I am as susceptible to it all as anyone. ?Those who know me will attest that I am vain and that I spend a fair amount of time dressing well and grooming. ?I do this because it makes me feel good. ?It makes me feel good as it makes me feel attractive. ?I like to feel attractive and at its heart is the desire to be attractive to other people. ?I might not want to do anything with them, but I at least want to know they might want to do something with me. ?Vain much???

What was so interesting about the documentary (A)Sexuality was the exploration of a group of people who have no desire for sexual intimacy and so conduct all their relationships on a different level. ?David Jay had this amazing matrix of friendships where he spent a calculated amount of time with each individual based on the desire to develop, close relationships with many but none of a sexual nature. ?His reasoning was that if he could show the sort of love on a friendship level that you have in a sexual relationship, but to many, the sum total was a much stronger result. ?The strength of this matrix was far above what could be achieved through a one to one sexual relationship. ?I think that was it anyway?

Interestingly when they revisited David 2 years later, the ?main? people in his life had drifted away. ?They had formed relationships with others (sexual) and had not kept close. ?I think this was the fundamental problem with David?s plan. ?It was very based around him and demanded a lot of people who in the majority are intensely sexual. ?It will always be a matter of time before people form sexual relationships with others and this will dominate their lives. ?The majority of people in David?s matrix were not a-sexual.

Of course it is perfectly possible to have close relationships with people outside of your relationship with your sexual partner. ?Indeed, most of us probably do this. ?Even I, who is notoriously good at not maintaining long term friendships, have a few select people who I regard as close friends and will always be so. ?One in particular lives in another part of New Zealand and I might not see for years, but I still regard her as a close friend. ?However, on the level that David Jay was requiring, I am just not convinced you can do it with sexual people who form relationships. ?When we revisited David 2 years later, he himself was considering forming a sexual relationship with someone to get the other things he craved from a close relationship.

Apart from the very interesting individuals in the documentary, and believe me they all were. ?A stand out moment for me was when a group gathered in San Francisco to march in the Gay Pride march. ?They were nervous and prepared themselves accordingly. ?These were people who had spent most of their lives being excluded and not accepted for who they are. ?Surely on the face of it, within the GLBT community they would find their home and be accepted. ?Surely within a community that was used to being often viewed as outside the norm, they would be accepted. ?Of course NO! ?GLBT people are still sexual and have the same trouble accepting people who state they are not. ?It still seems weird to them too. ?It made me feel sad in a way. ?To see people quite critical of these people who just wanted to be accepted. ??I pity your soul??. was one comment.

Another interesting element was the tendency of people to mix a-sexuality with celibacy. ??Oh yeah, I was a-sexual for while after my last boyfriend?? ?No you weren?t. ?You were celibate and had no desire for sex for a while or at least no desire for a relationship and sex. ?A-sexuality is not something which comes and goes with your libido or emotional state. ?It is an innate sexual preference or indeed lack of sexual desire.

Lastly, the documentary also spent some time looking at whether these people had some deficiency that made them this way. ?Was a-sexuality a sign of something being broken. ?Apparently there is a high percentage link between people on the Aspergers spectrum and those who identify as a-sexual, however nothing conclusive has ever been drawn and rightly so, doctors and scientists were reluctant to make definitive statements in this area. ?Are they lacking a hormone, did something happen to them in childhood they have blocked out. ?It?s common and predictable to look for an answer to things we don?t understand. It?s the same argument that has been played about homosexuality at times. ?Something broken, something that needs to be fixed.

Whatever the reason, I wonder why we feel the need to fix? ?Why some would feel that something should be done if the individual is happy or has no desire to have this state changed. ?Are we not better learning to live with what we have? ?However, I still do find it challenging on the level of biology. ?If we accept that as beings, as animals, we are naturally designed to want to reproduce. ?A need to keep the species going and pass on our genetic code, then how does that leave these people? ?Surely something is wrong if we do not want to do this? ?Someone put forward an interesting counter argument to this to me. ?They postulated that maybe we have evolved so far and there are so many people on the planet, that some of us are naturally developing not to reproduce. ?In all honesty it probably would not be a bad thing, however, I am not sure I buy it.

So where am I going with this? ?Did I say I was going somewhere with it you foolish reader? ?I find the subject of sexuality very interesting and amazing. ?I find it sad that a group of people can be so excluded or judged just because they choose to be upfront about they fact that they never have any sexual desire. ?I find it sad and frustrating that we as a society put so much expectation on people whatever their sexual orientation. ?As Paul McCartney sang?. Let it be?..
