William Shatner can't save Seth MacFarlane at Oscars

William Shatner reprised his Star Trek role in a vain attempt to rescue Seth MacFarlane's Oscars 2013 comedy monologue. William Shatner, aka Capt. Kirk, returned from 'the future' to advise MacFarlane.

With jokes about domestic violence, breast-baring actresses, picking up Sally Field and a presidential assassination, Seth MacFarlane certainly didn't go soft during his first turn as Oscars host.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

MacFarlane has the good looks and suave manner of a typical show host, but he was a nontraditional choice for the Oscars. His creative calling card is behind-the-scenes work, as maker of the TV show "Family Guy" and movie "Ted." He tried to soften it with self-deprecation, but MacFarlane quickly proved a polarizing choice.

After MacFarlane appeared uncomfortable telling jokes in the opening monologue, he brought on William Shatner via video hook-up for an extended riff on Shatner as a time traveler appearing from the future trying to save MacFarlane from himself.

It sent MacFarlane into some high-concept ? if low-brow ? comedy. He was shown in a song and dance routine, backed by the Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus, naming famous actresses and the films where they displayed their breasts. During a quick cutaway, Charlize Theron ? one of the actresses named ? did not appear amused.

In another skit, scenes from the movie "Flight" were performed by sock puppets. An overly long skit ? again designed to illustrate MacFarlane's "bad taste" ? showed him wearing a Flying Nun costume in an attempt to pick up Sally Field backstage.

MacFarlane drew groans with a reference to pop stars Rihanna and Chris Brown, back together as a couple four years after a domestic violence incident involving the two.

Talking about the movie "Django Unchained," MacFarlane called it "the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subject to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie."

MacFarlane drew more groans from the audience during a discussion of the movie "Lincoln" and actors who had portrayed the 19th Century president.

"I would argue that the actor who really got inside Lincoln's head was John Wilkes Booth," MacFarlane said.

He seemed to anticipate and delight in the response. "150 years and it's still too soon, huh? I've got some Napoleon jokes coming up."

In his opening monologue, MacFarlane delivered a quick, knowing poke at the academy for snubbing Ben Affleck as a best director nominee for the movie "Argo." He referred to the movie's story about an undercover mission to rescue Americans trapped in Iran during the 1980 hostage crisis.

"The story is so top secret that the film's director is unknown to the academy," MacFarlane said.

He joked about "Lincoln" best actor nominee Daniel Day Lewis' habit of staying in character during filming days even when the cameras were turned off, addressing him: "If you bumped into Don Cheadle in the studio lot, would you try and free him?"

MacFarlane appeared to loosen up once his opening routine was over. He drew some laughs with a handful of solid jokes when talking about Quvenzhane Wallis, the 9-year-old best actress nominess for "Beasts of the Southern Wild. "George Clooney smiled at a joke about Wallis being a future dating partner.

The puppet teddy bear of "Ted" even got in a few Jewish jokes during a routine with Mark Wahlberg. The bear claimed to be Jewish, which he thought was a prerequisite for working in the film business.

"I was born Theodore Shapiro and I would like to donate money to Israel and continue to work in Hollywood forever," the bear said.

"You're an idiot," Wahlberg retorted.

Some of MacFarlane's jokes drew rebukes by tweeters, while his supporters countered that the Oscars should have known what they were getting when hiring him. In the weeks before he took the stage, MacFarlane frequently predicted he would be savaged by critics. His opening routine with Shatner even had the "Star Trek" actor displaying a supposed headline from the future saying MacFarlane was the worst Oscars host ever.

And it was difficult to tell how much he was joking when he introduced Sandra Bullock for an award presentation.

"Our next presenter portrayed a raging alcoholic in the movie '28 Days,' which is kind of a weird coincidence because I'm going to be playing one in about an hour and a half," he said.

Kurdish militant leader to call ceasefire next month: reports

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Jailed Kurdish militant leader Abdullah Ocalan will call a ceasefire at the Kurdish New Year next month, moving forward a peace process with Turkey aimed at ending his group's 28-year-old insurgency, media reports said on Monday.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said a planned withdrawal of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants from Turkey after a ceasefire was established would begin the process of ending a conflict which has killed more than 40,000 people.

The premier, criticized for negotiating with Ocalan - a man reviled by most Turks, called for national unity on peace efforts.

Ocalan, head of the PKK, has been holding peace talks with Turkey since last October and met a delegation of Kurdish politicians at the weekend to discuss the negotiations.

At those talks, on the island of Imrali near Istanbul, he signaled the PKK may release Turkish state officials it is holding, according to a statement read by the politicians. Several newspapers on Monday reported details of a timetable to end the conflict.

"Ocalan will make a ceasefire call to the PKK at Newroz for a lasting peace," the liberal Radikal daily said, referring to the March 21 Kurdish New Year. The Yeni Safak newspaper, which is close to the government, carried a similar report. They did not disclose their sources.

Only a few Turkish officials are familiar with details of the negotiations and lawmakers from the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) who visited Ocalan on Saturday only conveyed the brief statement from the PKK leader.

"My health is good but I am getting old. I want to see peace before I die," the Milliyet daily quoted Ocalan, 63, as saying in Imrali where he has been held in virtual isolation since his capture in 1999.

The timetable for ending the conflict envisages a gradual withdrawal of several thousand militants from Turkey after the ceasefire call and Yeni Safak said the PKK fighters would begin leaving Turkey between March and June.

OCALAN PLAN SENT TO PKK

In his first comments since the weekend talks, Erdogan said on Monday that a militant pullout would be a turning point, followed by a process of bringing the guerrillas down from the mountains in northern Iraq where they are based.

"The withdrawal of terrorists in Turkey to a second country will mean the effective beginning of this process," he told reporters on his plane back from a trip to Dubai, acknowledging there were risks of a backlash against negotiating with Ocalan.

"If other sections of society share the risk we are taking, and the media is important in this, we will speed up our progress," Dogan news agency reported him as saying.

In return for the PKK measures, the government is expected to push through reforms extending the rights of a Kurdish minority numbering about 15 million out of a population of 76 million.

Last week the government sent to parliament a penal reform bill which is expected to result in the release of some of the thousands of Kurdish activists who are currently on trial accused of links to the PKK.

The PKK, which is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union, launched its insurgency in 1984 with the aim of carving out a Kurdish state in southeast Turkey but it has moderated its goal to limited self-rule.

A 21-page record of the talks between Ocalan and the BDP was delivered to the PKK leadership in the Qandil mountains of northern Iraq on Saturday night and Ocalan's 61-page peace plan was being delivered to the PKK separately, Yeni Safak said.

It added that the PKK was expected to release several security personnel and officials which it holds this week, while its fighters in Turkey were ordered to keep away from military areas. There was no immediate comment from the PKK.

The PKK holds nine people, including soldiers and civil servants, according to the Diyarbakir-based Human Rights Association.

Pope, on last Sunday, says following God's wishes

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict spoke from his window for the last time on Sunday, telling the faithful packed into St. Peter's Square that the first papal abdication in centuries was God's will and insisting he was not "abandoning" the Church.

Four days before the 85-year-old's often troubled eight-year rule ends, new talk of scandal hit the cardinals who will choose his successor; one of them, a Scottish archbishop, had to deny a media allegation of misconduct with young priests in the 1980s.

With an American cardinal urged not to go to the electoral conclave due to his role in handling sexual abuse cases in the United States, and the Vatican accusing media of running smears to influence the vote, the Church faces a stormy succession.

Benedict, however, defended his shock decision to resign as dictated by his failing health; his address to tens of thousands of well-wishers was met with calls of "Viva il Papa!"

"The Lord is calling me to climb the mountain, to dedicate myself even more to prayer and meditation," the German-born pontiff said in Italian, his voice strong and carrying clearly.

"But this does not mean abandoning the Church. Actually, if God asks this of me, it is precisely because I can continue to serve her with the same dedication and the same love I have shown so far," he said, adding that he would be serving the Church "in a way more in keeping with my age and my strengths".

As he spoke, two of the some 117 cardinals who are due to enter the conclave to choose his successor as leader of the 1.2 billion Roman Catholics next month were mired in controversy.

Britain's top Catholic cleric, Cardinal Keith O'Brien of Edinburgh, rejected allegations published in the Observer newspaper that he had been involved in unspecified inappropriate behavior with other priests in the past.

The paper said O'Brien, known for his outspoken views against homosexuality, had been reported to the Vatican by three priests and a former priest, who said they had come forward to demand O'Brien resign and not take part in the conclave.

"Cardinal O'Brien contests these claims and is taking legal advice," a spokesman for the 74-year-old cardinal said.

He was the second cardinal to be caught up in controversy over his attendance ahead of the conclave, where 117 "princes of the Church" under 80 will elect a new pope from their ranks.

On Saturday, Catholic activists petitioned Cardinal Roger Mahony to recuse himself from the conclave so as not to insult survivors of sexual abuse by priests committed while he was archbishop of Los Angeles.

In that post from 1985 until 2011, Mahony worked to send priests known to be abusers out of state to shield them from law enforcement scrutiny in the 1980s, according to church files unsealed under a U.S. court order last month.

SAINTS AND SINNERS

Benedict's papacy was rocked by scandals over the sex abuse of children by priests in Europe and the United States, most of which preceded his time in office but came to light during it.

His reign also saw Muslim anger after he compared Islam to violence. Jews were upset over his rehabilitation of a Holocaust denier. During a scandal over the Church's business dealings, his butler was convicted of leaking his private papers.

But the minds of those in the crowd in St Peter's Square, some holding banners reading "Thank you Holy Father," were not on scandals, real or potential, but on the Church history unfolding around them.

"It's bittersweet," said Sarah Ennis, 21, a student from Minnesota who studies in Rome. "Bitter because we love our Pope Benedict and hate to see him go, but sweet because he is going for a good reason and we are excited to see the next pope."

Others, however, saw it as a possible harbinger of bad moons for the Church.

"This is an ill wind blowing," said midwife Marina Tacconi.

"It feels like something ugly could happen. I'm 58 years old, I have seen popes come and go. But never one resign.

"I don't see it as a good thing."

The Sunday address was one of Benedict's last appearances as pontiff before the curtain comes down on a problem-ridden pontificate.

On Wednesday, he will hold his last general audience in St. Peter's Square and on Thursday he will meet with cardinals and then fly to the papal summer retreat south of Rome.

The papacy will become vacant at 8 p.m. Rome time (1900 GMT) on Thursday, February 28.

Cardinals will begin meetings the next day to prepare for a secret conclave in the Sistine Chapel.

They have already begun informal consultations by phone and email in the past two weeks since Benedict announced his shock abdication in order to build a profile of the man they think would be best suited to lead the Church through rough seas.

On Monday, the pope is expected to issue slight changes to Church rules governing the conclave so that it could start before March 15, the earliest it can be held under a detailed constitution by his predecessor John Paul.

Some cardinals believe a conclave should start sooner than March 15 in order to reduce the time in which the Church will be without a leader at a time of crisis.

But some in the Church believe that an early conclave would give an unfair advantage to cardinals already in Rome and working in the Curia, the Vatican's central administration, which has been at the centre of accusations of ineptitude that some say led Benedict to step down.

The Vatican appears to be aiming to have a new pope elected by mid-March and then formally installed before Palm Sunday on March 24 so he can preside at Holy Week services leading to Easter.

Benedict and his predecessor, John Paul II, made sure any man awarded a cardinal's red hat was firmly in line with key Catholic doctrine supporting priestly celibacy and Vatican authority and opposing abortion, women priests, gay marriage and other liberal reforms.

Slingshot Racing brings one-touch steampunk bobsledding to Android

Slingshot Racing for Android

An absolutely fantastic racing game called Slingshot Racing hit Android today, and I couldn't wait until our next Apps of the Week to tell you guys about it. Players are thrust into steampunk-style world where, for some reason or another, bobsled racing is a big thing. Instead of manually steering as one usually does in racing games, players have to instead tap, hold, and release the screen to deploy grappling hooks to the nearest spinning pivot point and slingshot around the bend. Timing is critical, and with competitors muscling for rank, it can get pretty intense. The best part about the control scheme is that it enables four people to play locally on the same device, which is a ton of fun.

All sorts of game modes are available, including the standard time trial, another where you have to collect cogs, and one where you have to flee for as long as possible from a nasty chomper. The graphics in Slingshot Racing are full of character, and there's no shortage of replayability. Pick this one up for a mere $0.99 - trust me.

Turn an IKEA Bookshelf Into an Attractive Bench

Turn an IKEA Bookshelf Into an Attractive Bench We already knew that Ikea Expedit bookshelves could be turned into a bed with tons of storage, but you can also use one as an attractive bench.

As far as IKEA hacks go, this one is about as simple as it gets. You'll basically set the unit down on its side, and put some pillows or cushions on top. If you want to decorate the backs of the shelves, IKEA Hackers suggests covering squares of cardboard with wrapping paper, and attaching them to the back. However, if your home is short on space, I could see sticking some fabric storage cubes in the compartments instead.

For more photos of the project, check out the source link. The guide calls for a Lack bookshelf, which is no longer available for sale, but an Expedit should work just as well.

Tens of thousands in Spain protest economic policy, corruption

MADRID (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Spaniards marched through cities across the country on Saturday to protest deep austerity, the privatization of public services and political corruption.

Gathering under the banner of the "Citizen Tide", students, doctors, unionists, young families and pensioners staged rowdy but non-violent demonstrations as a near five-year economic slump shows no sign of recovery and mass unemployment rises.

"I'm here to add my voice. They're cutting where they shouldn't cut; health, education ... basic services. And the latest corruption scandal is just the tiniest tip of a very large iceberg," said Alberto, 51, an account administrator for a German multinational in Madrid, who preferred not to give his surname.

Protests in Spain have become commonplace as the conservative government passes measures aimed at shrinking one of the euro zone's highest budget deficits and reinventing an economy hobbled by a burst housing bubble.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has introduced some of the deepest budget cuts in Spain's democratic history in an attempt to convince investors the country can weather the economic crisis without falling back on international aid.

But, with more than half of the country's young people out of work and growth not expected until sometime next year, the measures have only scratched the surface of the budget shortfall which is expected to be more than double the target in 2014.

Meanwhile, corruption scandals which have hit the ruling party as well as the once-popular royal family has left many Spaniards disenchanted with their leaders on all sides of the political spectrum.

In Madrid, under a clear, cold winter sky, Saturday's marches convened from four different points by early evening in Neptune Square, between the heavily policed and barricaded parliament, the Ritz Hotel and the stock exchange.

Carrying placards which condemned everything from cuts in the health sector to massive bailouts granted to Spain's banking system, crowds banged drums and chanted, while dozens of riot police stood on the sidelines.

The march coincided with the anniversary of a failed coup attempt in 1981 by Civil Guard officers who stormed Parliament and held deputies hostage until the next day.

Portlandia, Season 3

In?Slate's?Portlandia?TV Club, Chris Wade will IM each week with a different fan of?the show. This week, he discusses ?No-Fo-O-Fo-Bridge? with Slate copy editor Miriam Krule.

Chris Wade: As someone who's been poring over this season, ?No-Fo-O-Fo-Bridge? felt like third-season Portlandia confidently emerging from its metamorphosis into a more complicated and specific kind of sketch show, finally nailing the balance between episodic plots and strong one-off sketches it?s been tinkering with all season. But you?re not that type of fan, right?

Miriam Krule: I've seen a lot of the show, but mostly through clips. And there hasn't been an episode this season I felt I needed to see in full, especially not tonight's. I thought this episode was really short on relatable clips, ones that go viral like "Did you read this?" and the Battlestar Galactica opening, which are the reason I watch the show in the first place.

Wade: Interesting and understandable. Yes, this whole season has seriously lacked notable stand-alone sketches. Tonight?s episode conforms to this trend, but it?s also functioning surprisingly well on a different level. We basically have two mini sitcom arcs: the drama in Fred-Carrie-Alexandra's love triangle and the animated Rat roommates having their friendship tested by a move. Both felt well-realized and left room for strong one-off sketches.

Krule: My favorite scene was Alexandra breaking up with Carrie at a community table restaurant. It was cloaked in the love triangle, but was still funny on its own.

Wade: This might be one of my favorite scenes this show has done. Balancing details from a relationship they hinted at all season (and defined last week) with a classically Portlandian absurd situation and stuffed with jokes relating to both. It handled the relationship-based humor of a good sitcom with the lightness and tangential relationship to reality of a sketch show.?

Krule: Can you explain the appeal of the rats? It seems like in some writing meeting someone said "Well, there should PROBABLY be stop-motion animation in this show ... " But it?s just another scene of people sitting around complaining about toy stores that sell only wooden toys.

Wade: There?s a toy store like that on my block. I agree that the stop-motion animation, while very lushly rendered, feels superfluous and distracting at times. That being said, the last two times we've seen them, the scenes were actually really funny and had a lot of great lines. (Especially from the neurotic third rat, played by producer John Levenstein: "I tried to keep the ad simple, 'roommate wanted,' but it's so much more complicated than that right now.") We also have a few strong one-off sketches. Fred and Carrie navigating the labyrinth of escalators in an urban multiplex was pretty identifiable.

Krule: I thought that was only a Times Square thing, but was a nice touch having the useless ticket rippers, too. The cold open about baby-raising techniques was also good. It was short and sweet and hit just the right note at the end. And Fred "being himself" with the baby is perfect: It seems to me every parent does actually talk to his toddler, or at least wants to, as if they're old friends.

Wade: I liked that all the stand-alones involved Fred and Carrie playing new characters, or at least wearing new wigs, instead of continuing to force material on their heavily used stock characters of Kath and Dave, Peter and Nance.

Krule: Here?s the thing: I?m a fair-weather Portlandia fan. I?ll champion the show when it?s funny, but I?m still not compelled to follow its every move.

Wade: Fair enough, but it might be less and less rewarding to be this kind of fan of the show if it continues this trajectory. Although based on the teaser, the finale looks kind of epic and amazing.

Krule: I might just have to wait for the recap.

GOP: Obama's higher taxes to ruin economy

WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- President Obama's insistence on higher taxes is threatening to put the U.S. economy in a tailspin, a Republican senator charged Saturday.

Delivering the GOP's weekly media address, Sen. John Hoeven of North Dakota spoke less than a week before mandatory across-the-board cuts for all federal agencies are set to begin.

Hoeven said congressional Republicans were ready to "provide the flexibility" to make the needed spending cuts and avoid sequestration, The Hill reported.

Republicans in the House have passed two bills that would avoid the sequester, he said. However, the president has refused to agree to the House proposals "because he wants higher taxes."

Creating jobs and expanding the tax base, not higher taxes and spending controls, were the right way to deal with the deficit, Hoeven said, but he said Obama was blocking economic growth with "more regulation, red tape, and bureaucracy."

The former North Dakota governor also slammed the president for failing to approve the Keystone XL pipeline that would bring 830,000 barrels of tar sands oil a day from Canada to refineries in the southern United States, as well as 100,000 barrels a day from Montana and North Dakota.

LA cardinal: I'm a 'scapegoat' for sex-abuse crisis

There still isn't a frontrunner to succeed Pope Benedict, and some are asking that California Cardinal Roger Mahony ? who was criticized for his role in shielding abusive priests -- skip the conclave. New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who is also attending the conclave, was recently deposed regarding his role in dealing with abusive priests in Wisconsin. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

Los Angeles' retired Cardinal Roger Mahony, who was rebuked last month for his handling of the sex-abuse crisis, suggests he was "scapegoated" in a blog post ahead of two important dates: his Saturday deposition in a lawsuit alleging that?the church hierarchy protected a priest accused of molesting children?and his trip to Rome to help pick the next pope.

The high-profile "prince of the church" is at the center of an outcry over several scandal-tainted cardinals being allowed to help choose who will succeed Pope Benedict XVI at next month's conclave at the Vatican.

Ireland's Sean Brady, Belgium's Godfried Danneels and Philadelphia's Justin Rigali have all been pilloried in the Italian press over allegations they failed to protect children from pedophiles -- but it's Mahony who has drawn the most ire.

A group called Catholics United started a petition against his attendance at the conclave. And an Italian consumer group requested Rome prosecutors open a criminal investigation into Mahony if he travels to the Vatican, the news agency ANSA reported Friday.

Improbable as that is, it underscores the outrage in some quarters that cardinals whose reputations have been battered by cover-up allegations will have an equal say in who will next lead the world's 1.3 billion Catholics.

NBC News' Vatican expert, George Weigel, said he could not recall similar calls for abstention at other conclaves, but he noted that voting is an obligation under church law and that other "less-than-admirable" figures have attended for more than a millennium.

"If people are looking for a perfect, sinless electorate to choose religious leadership, they should look somewhere else," Weigel said.

Mahony, who retired as head of the L.A. Archdiocese last year, was stripped of his remaining diocesan duties last month over his handling of priest sex abuse cases.?He has repeatedly apologized for past mistakes but isn't bowing to pressure to skip the historic moment. No criminal charges have been filed against him.

He's raising eyebrows and hackles, however, with a series of blog posts about the rebuke.

In one this week, Mahony said he had tried to live out "the acceptance of being scapegoated, pointing out the necessary connection between humiliation and redemption."

Vincenzo Pinto / AFP - Getty Images

After Pope Benedict XVI steps down next week, the cardinals will pick his successor. Some say not everyone deserves a vote.

"This scandal is putting us, the clergy and the church, where we belong -- with the excluded ones," he added. "Jesus was painted with the same brush as the two thieves crucified with him."

The Surviviors Network of those Abused by Priests slammed the language.

"It's hurtful and disingenuous for Mahony to claim he's been scapegoated," said director David Clohessy. "He's been a bishop for almost 40 years and the sole?head of America's largest archdiocese for more than a quarter century. Few, if any, U.S. Catholic prelates have been more powerful than Mahony. So for him to somehow pretend to be a powerless pawn is pathetic."

Fueling the latest round of criticism of Mahony is last month's release of reams of confidential personnel files that, according to Reuters, showed Mahony and an aide, Thomas Curry, worked to send priests accused of abuse out of California to shield them from law enforcement scrutiny in the 1980s.

In a letter to the archdiocese about the documents and his dismissal, Mahony said that he had worked hard since 1989 to toughen guidelines for handling abuse and apologized for missteps before that.

"I have stated time and time again that I made mistakes, especially in the mid-1980s," he wrote. "I apologized for those mistakes, and committed myself to make certain that the Archdiocese was safe for everyone."

The document release -- part of a $660 million settlement with abuse victims struck in 2007-- has set the stage for this weekend's deposition by Mahony in a lawsuit by a 35-year-old man who says he was molested by a priest in the late 1980s.

The suit alleges that church officials effectively let the Rev. Nicholas Aguilar Rivera escape to Mexico after child sex-abuse complaints were made, the Associated Press reported. He remains a fugitive.

One 1988 memo made public last month revealed a top Mahony lieutenant confided that he told Rivera ?it was likely the accusations would be reported to the police and that he was in a good deal of danger."

The plaintiff?s lawyer, Anthony De Marco, will have four hours to question Mahony about Rivera and 25 other priests, attempting to show a pattern of cover-up so he can try to collect punitive damages on behalf of his client.

Then, within days, Mahony will fly to Rome to join 116 other cardinals under the age of 80 who will meet twice a day in the Sistine Chapel to elect the next pontiff.

"Mahony?s bad luck is all of these documents were released right before the pope resigned and this is why people are going after him instead of other people," said Father Thomas Reese, author of "Inside the Vatican: The Politics and Organization of the Catholic Church."

He said there was virtually no chance Mahony would be pressured to stay away.

"The last one turned away from a conclave was in the time of the Napoleon," he said.

"If Mahony can't go, then there's a whole list of other cardinals who maybe can't go, and if you say these guys can't attend for this reason, then what about other reasons."

Even after sidelining him, the L.A. Archdiocese backed Mahony's voyage to Rome. In a statement, it portrayed Catholics United as a fringe group and its petition as pointless.

"Cardinal Mahony will travel to Rome to fulfill his sacred duty under church law to vote for the next pope,? it said.

Cardinal Roger Mahony was stripped of duties last month. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Zotac ZBox Nano AD12 Plus

As I was leaving the Labs the other day, I slipped the Zotac ZBox Nano AD12 Plus ($304.99 direct) into my bag before heading out. This would be fairly unremarkable if the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus was an ultrabook or tablet. But here's the thing: It's a nettop, and one that's compact enough to fit as behind your HDTV as easily as it did in my bag. For a shade over $300, it's an affordable way to jazz up your home entertainment system. That said, though, it's far from perfect. For starters, you'll need to purchase an operating system separately to actually get the system running. Additionally, the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus doesn't have the chops to do anything more intensive than light computing tasks. Still, though, it's a decent option for anyone who intends to use it mainly for media consumption.

Design and Features
Measuring 1.77 by 5 by 5 inches (HWD) and weighing 1.23 pounds, the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus is even smaller than the Lenovo IdeaCentre Q150 and fits in the palm of your hand as easily as a stack of jewel cases. Its square-shaped metallic chassis is decked out in a two-tone color scheme, with black plastic on the top and bottom abutting silver lining on the sides. Like the Giada i53 Mini PC's chassis, the glossy black plastic is highly prone to smudging. There's a circular LED that emanates a green hue. Four removable rubber feet on the bottom provide a grip for horizontal orientation. These can be unscrewed if the user opts for vertical positioning, which clears the way for attaching the bundled VESA mounting plate on the underside.

Despite its limited surface area, an impressive amount of ports have been crammed onto the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus. The front panel houses a pair of USB 2.0 ports, a mini-optical S/PDIF out jack, a microphone jack, and a 7-in-1 memory card reader (MMC/SD/SDHC/SDXC/MS/MS Pro/xD). The rear panel features two more USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, an eSATA port, an RJ45 Ethernet port, and a socket for the included Wi-Fi antennae connector, which can be used to strengthen the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus's 802.11n Wi-Fi signal. The ZBox Nano AD12 Plus also sports Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, letting users connect a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse without having to mess about with dongles. Lastly, there are HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, which allows for two displays to be used simultaneously. While the latter is undoubtedly a nifty feature, the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus nevertheless forces users to remain tethered to their larger displays since it doesn't feature Intel's Wireless Display technology, which can beams data directly to a HDTVs outfitted with an aftermarket adapter like the Netgear Push2TV ($99 list). Still, that's a forgivable omission at this price point.

Opening the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus's chassis is a simple operation that merely requires removing the underside's four rubber feet?which double as thumbscrews?and popping off the cover. Doing so reveals a little room for upgrades. Our test unit's single DIMM socket was occupied by a 2GB memory module, which can be replaced with a 4GB or 8GB stick. The included 320GB 5,400rpm HDD can be swapped with a more capacious 2.5-inch HDD or a solid-state drive (SSD).

Included peripherals, on the other hand, aren't as abundant. Unlike the Acer Revo RL100-UR20P, the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus doesn't come with a bundled keyboard or mouse. It does, however, ship with a remote, which is handy for navigating through whichever media-playback interface you install.

Speaking of omissions, the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus doesn't ship with an operating system, so users intent on using Windows Media Center as an entertainment portal will need to shell out extra cash for Windows 7 or 8 (we installed Windows 7 on our test unit). Bear in mind that since the ZBox Nano AD12 doesn't have an optical drive, doing so will require the use of an external optical drive, which in turn contributes to another added expense.

Zotac ZBox Nano AD12 Plus

Performance
The ZBox Nano AD12 Plus packs a 1.7GHz AMD A2-1800 APU (accelerated processing unit), which combines a dual-core AMD processor and Radeon HD 7430 graphics on a single chip. The system yielded predictably modest scores on our benchmark tests. Its PCMark7 score of 1,040 points managed to squeak past the Acer RL100-UR20P (994 points) while falling significantly short of the Giada i53 Mini PC (4,337), which boasts a more robust Core i5-3317U CPU but also costs twice as much. Its Cinebench R11.5 score of 0.65, meanwhile, landed between the Giada MiniPC A50 (0.64) and the Acer RL100-UR20P (0.69), and trumped the Lenovo Q150 (0.52).

Since the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus is primarily geared toward media consumption, its capacity for creation was unsurprisingly not as sure-footed. It completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in 6 minutes 43 seconds, which is sluggish even though it outpaces both the Giada MiniPC A50 (9:18) and Lenovo Q150 (12:31). Moreover, it took 15:09 to run through our usual collection of a dozen filters in Photoshop CS5. That was quicker than the snail-like pace of the Lenovo Q150 (23:38) but short of the Acer RL100-UR20P (13:19) and, to a greater extent, the Giada MiniPC A50 (9:02).

Zotac ZBox Nano AD12 Plus

Given these scores, then, it didn't come as a major shock that the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus couldn't run any of our gaming benchmark tests. Ultimately, the results confirm what we had already suspected: beyond its home-entertainment functionality, the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus doesn't have the firepower to perform much beyond light daily tasks such as web browsing and casual social gaming.

For folks looking for an affordable way to jazz up their home entertainment systems, the Zotac ZBox Nano AD12 Plus is a decent choice. It's compact, stuffed with ports, and looks cool enough to show off to your friends. Still, it doesn't bring enough to the table to unseat the Acer Revo RL100-UR20P as Editors' Choice for nettop PCs. The latter includes a Blu-ray player and larger hard drive, and while it costs $300 extra, the difference isn't as pronounced after outfitting the ZBox Nano AD12 Plus with an operating system, keyboard, and mouse. Still, for anyone interested in using it mainly for its intended media-consumption purposes and who doesn't mind these shortcomings, it's worth checking out.
