New EU campaign to promote low carbon society
Posted on 09 October 2012 by Priyanka Shrestha
The EU has launched a new campaign aimed to show how climate action can improve people?s quality of life.
Called ?A world you like. With a climate you like?, the campaign seeks to promote a low carbon society and put ?practical solutions? at the centre of the climate change debate.
The campaign is in collaboration with more than 70 organisations across Europe and hopes to engage with people interested in sharing their visions and innovations for a climate-friendly future. It is centred on a website, which will work as a platform where individuals, businesses and local groups can upload, promote and discuss their low-carbon solutions.
Run by the European Commission?s Directorate-General for Climate Action, it also aims to showcase existing cost-efficient solutions to help the EU achieve its target of reducing 80-90% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Welcoming the launch, Energy Secretary Ed Davey said: ?The EU is a powerful voice when it comes to making the case for action to tackle climate change. By working closely together, the EU and UK form a formidable partnership that can bring about real change.
?Commissioner Hedegaard?s campaign focuses on engaging the business community, including small and medium enterprises. I support this strategy of engaging with the businesses ? big and small ? as they are and will be a crucial player in the long term change we need to bring about.?
The EU also has targets of cutting greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency and boosting the share of renewables in the energy mix by 20% by 2020.
The campaign is set to run until the end of next year.
