Pepper Pike tornado clean-up underway

The roar of chainsaws was a common sound in Pepper Pike Sunday as residents continued to clean-up from the EF-1 tornado that touched down in the city Saturday.

The Smith family had their hands full as multiple trees came down in the front and back yards of their Plymouth Road home. Luckily there was no major damage to the house itself.

The Smiths had plenty of help from family and friends to cut and remove the downed trees.

"At first, it was like my dad, Scotty and I early this morning and we were not going very fast at all so I am very glad everyone showed up to help," said Sydney Smith.

"We just understood this is a family effort and called all of our friends. People showed up that we didn't even call," added Scott Smith.

The tornado, which reached wind speeds of 110 MPH, also caused extensive damage on Emerson Drive, where trees toppled onto homes.

The Church of the Western Reserve also suffered roof damage, broken windows and water damage.

Mayor Richard Bain stated that it is unlikely the city will qualify for FEMA emergency grant money. The city has been offered assistance by Cuyahoga County officials if needed.

"The regional sewer district is programmed to help us out with clearing fallen trees out of the creeks," said Bain.

Cleanup also continued Sunday at Ursuline College as crews removed downed trees from parking lots. Members of the campus community turned out to see the damage first-hand.

Many took pictures and looked on with disbelief at the sight of the collapsed external wall at O'Brien Athletic Center.

"They normally have day camps here during the week," said Ursuline College employee Megan Hallo. "It was just incredible that nobody was hurt. I'm so grateful for that."

The campus will be closed on Monday, July 22nd while clean-up continues. For Ursuline College updates log onto http://www.ursuline.edu.
